JoJo Siwa is not the one to keep silent if she is not treated right. The 18-year-old performer became well known after appearing in Nickelodeon’s made-for-TV movie “Burt!” and on the network’s program “Lip Sync Battle Shorties” alongside Nick Cannon.
But now, after several years of collaboration with the popular children’s programming channel Nickelodeon, JoJo Siwa is speaking out against them in a statement made on Twitter.
JoJo Siwa claimed on Tuesday night that Nickelodeon is preventing her from performing certain songs on her 37-city D.R.E.A.M. tour that begins in January.
“I go out on tour in January. My movie musical was just released (with 6 new original songs)…” she wrote. “Nickelodeon told me today that I’m not allowed to perform/add any of the songs from the film into my show. These are MY songs, MY voice, MY writing. Does this seem fair???”
In a follow-up tweet, she also wrote, “There is no reason that this music should not be included. Working for a company as a real human being treated as only a brand is fun until it’s not,” the Dancing with the Stars contestant added.
She also shared screenshots of the tweets on her Instagram, where she has nearly 11 million followers.
JoJo Siwa’s manager and her girlfriend Kylie Prew also shared her tweets about Nickelodeon on their own Instagram accounts.
Siwa tweeted again on Wednesday asking followers and Nickelodeon to remember she’s a human, “not just a brand.”
“I want my concert to be the BEST it can possibly be, and I want to perform the songs that YOU have been waiting to hear for 2 years. Having the music from my movie in my show is important to me, I wish it was important to Nickelodeon,” she said.
Earlier this month, Siwa starred in another Nickelodeon-produced television movie, “The J Team,” which premiered on Paramount+ on Sept. 3. The fictional story follows JoJo as she rebounds after being kicked out of her dance troupe.
As she said in her tweet, “The J Team” features several original songs including the popular “Dance Through the Day.”
In an interview with Fallon on “The Tonight Show,” Siwa said that the movie features six new original songs, as well as two of Siwa’s old songs, one of which was remixed for the film.
Meanwhile, on personal front, JoJo Siwa and her girlfriend Kylie Prew have a lot to celebrate when it comes to their relationship.
Explaining the celebratory moments, Siwa elaboated: “Ky asked me to be the girlfriend on the 8th, Jan. 8th. But then I was like, ‘You know what?’ I also need to ask you to be my girlfriend. So we did that.”
She continued: “And yesterday was the anniversary of that day, when I asked Ky to be my girlfriend.”
She then explained, “We actually celebrate four days though — when Ky asked me to be girlfriend, when I asked Ky to be girlfriend, when we told each other that we liked each other, and when we kissed for the first time. So we celebrate all four: 8th, 14th, 28th, and 29th.”
