Why is Michael B. Jordan’s new brand name so controversial?

The name of Michael B Jordan’s brand of rum is the main source of the public outrage. The name, “J’Ouvert” is a term which has it’s origins from the cultures of the Caribbean islands, Trinidad, and Tobago. It refers to the annual celebration of both the region’s independence from colonial powers.

People have pointed out that since the upcoming “Creed 3” star does not have a Caribbean descent, he is culturally appropriating the term and should not trademark “J’Ouvert”.

Michael B Jordan recently took to his official Instagram to post a written apology on his stories section. The 34-year-old wrote: “I just wanna say on behalf of myself & my partners, our intention was never to offend or hurt a culture (we love & respect) & hoped to celebrate & shine a positive light on,” he wrote. “Last few days has been a lot of listening. A lot of learning & engaging in countless community conversations …”

Jordan has also confirmed that he will be renaming the brand soon.

“We hear you,” Jordan added. “I hear you and want to be clear that we are in the process of renaming. We sincerely apologize and look forward to introducing a brand we can all be proud of.”

Michael B Jordan is now being defended by Nicki Minaj

Yup, the “Beam Me Up Scotty” rapper Nicki Minaj, whose birthplace is Trinidad and Tobago, tried to deflect some of the fire that Michael is currently under.

Nicki took to her Instagram to share a new post containing screenshot of some of the user’s explaination behind why the name is culturally appropriated.

She captioned the post by justifying that the name was not deliberately chosen by Michael b Jordan while also reminding the actor to rename the brand. She wrote that, “I’m sure MBJ didn’t intentionally do anything he thought Caribbean ppl would find offensive.”

She also added that, “but now that you are aware, change the name & continue to flourish & prosper. 🇹🇹 #jouvert”.
