Films like Gulabo Sitabo and Shakuntala Devi were recently premiered on the web and many others are likely to follow suit.
The nationwide lockdown imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic brought the entire entertainment business to a standstill. New projects were shelved, shooting was disrupted and the theatrical release of many films postponed. While cinema halls are gradually starting to open up, there is no guarantee if viewers will turn up to watch movies on the big screen. Given the looming uncertainty, producers are prudently opting to release their movies over OTT platforms.
Sources reveal that Disney+Hotstar would release around 10 big films digitally. Here’s the list of movies that will premiere via the streaming platform:
All eyes have been on this movie ever since its first poster came out. Akshay Kumar proves his versatility yet again as he plays the role of a transgender in the movie. It also stars Kiara Advani who has been on a roll since the success of her last two films. According to reports, the film is aiming for an Independence Day release.
The dark romantic thriller which marks Mahesh Bhatt’s comeback as a director was slated for a late March release but was pushed to July. It stars Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapur along with the couple that starred in its prequel – Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt.
BHUJ – THE PRIDE OF INDIA
Set during the Indo-Pak War of 1971, the war action film stars Ajay Devgn as IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, the then in-charge of the Bhuj airport. The movie revolves around his life and how him and his team reconstructed the IAF airbase with the aid of 300 local women. The ensemble cast includes Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Nora Fatehi among others. The movie was set to release on 14 August but will now be streamed digitally.
The much-awaited Indian adaptation of ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ will also apparently take the OTT route. The touching love story would mark the last film of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who died by suicide on June 14. The film stars debutante Sanjana Sanghi as the female lead and also features Saif Ali Khan.
Produced by Dinesh Vijjan who is known for films like Luka Chuppi and Hindi Medium, this horror comedy stars Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Sharma. The movie is about a ghost who abducts brides and is expected to be a light-hearted comedy, much like Stree.
Another Dinesh Vijjan production, Mimi is the Hindi remake of a National Award winning Marathi film and sees Kriti Sanon don the role of a surrogate mother. The cast also includes Pankaj Tripathi and Supriya Pathak.
THE BIG BULL
The Abhishek Bachchan starrer revolves around the life of stockbroker Harshad Mehta and the series of financial crimes committed by him. Produced by Ajay Devgn and Anand Pandit, it also stars Ileana D’Cruz, Nikita Dutta and Soham Shah in its lead cast.
Lootcase is a comedy drama starring Kunal Khemu in its lead and Vijay Raaz, Gajraj Rao and Ranvir Shoray in supporting roles. It was scheduled to hit the cinemas on October 11, 2019 along with ‘The Sky is Pink’ but got postponed endlessly.
The upcoming romantic drama film, backed by Dinesh Vijjan, stars Radhika Madan, Sunny Kaushal, Diana Penty and Mohit Raina as lead characters.
Khuda Haafiz is a romantic thriller film, directed by Faruk Kabir and starring Vidyut Jammwal and Shivaleeka Oberoi. A major chunk of the movie was shot in Uzbekistan.
