Aquaman had made a successful debut by proving to be a blockbuster at the box office with over $1.148 billion. But the second installation of the movie, Aquaman 2, is struggling even before getting into production.

The ongoing legal battle between the Aquaman star Amber Heard and her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, has made things difficult for Warner Bros. Studios to deal with both the actors.

Over a month ago, the studio had to recast his role as villain, Gellert Grindelwald, for Fantastic Beasts 3, after the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, Johnny Depp, lost his libel case against The Sun.

After Depp’s firing, Amber Heard is facing a lot of backlash by those who feel that she is evidently the abusive one in their relationship, and Depp needs to be redeemed.

Now, the fans are campaigning that Heard receives the same treatment as Depp. In fact, a petition focusing on removing Amber Heard from Aquaman 2 has received 2 million signatures. Warner Bros. is rumored to have taken upon the request and may be looking to cut down Amber’s role, if not recast her.

It is reported that the script of the movie is being written in a way that it allows the role of Amber Heard in Aquaman 2 to be “cut down if needed.” Another actress may also be introduced simultaneously to shift the limelight from Heard.

The role of Mera, which Amber Heard plays is very crucial for the movie as it goes hand in hand with Jason Mamoa’s Arthur Curry a.k.a Aquaman.

Who could be the new female lead alongside Amber Heard in Aquaman 2?

The most popular choice for the role is Emilia Clarke, who is popular for her titular role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. The rumors were fueled after a page on Instagram- ‘jph_photoshop’, edited a photo of Emilia Clarke to look like the red-headed Mera of Aquaman.

However, James Wan, the director of Aquaman 2 may have different ideas.

Reportedly, he is looking for an Asian actress to play the role of Dolphin, a prominent character in the comic book who is also Arthur Curry’s temporary love interest. Another reason for casting an Asian actress may be the popularity of Aquaman in China, where the film was a major success with almost $300 million in business.

For now, Amber Heard in Aquaman 2 is still a thing.

Aquaman 2 is due to start shooting in 2021, with its scheduled release in December 2022.
