Martin Scorsese’s next ‘Killer of the Flower Moon’ is an adaptation of a non-fiction murder mystery book ‘Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI’ by journalist David Grann. Apart from the accomplished star cast like Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in the lead roles, what makes the project more exciting is that the award winning director after the release of his much hyped masterpiece The Irishman was considering other projects too before finally picking this one. The list included the likes of Adam McKay’s next for Netflix.
The film ‘Killer of the Flower Moon’ will be produced by Imperative Studios and will be distributed by Paramount. As reported by Variety, Apple will finance the film and also become its creative studio. Imperative Studios has reportedly paid $5 million to acquire the rights for the filming of the book, the screenplay for which was written by Elon Roth. For long, the debate whether it should be a theatrical release or should be released on Netflix or any other OTT was on. Not just this a lot of discussions around the budget, which is now around $180 million to $200 million, were on between the producers and studio for a while now. The film will be released theatrically worldwide by Paramount. With the release of this film, Apple will take its game a notch higher in the streamers playground as later it will be released on Apple’s streaming service giving it, it’s second largest release by far. The other one being Greyhound starring Tom Hanks.
The book by David Grann is set in the 1920s in Osage, Oklahoma. It investigates the murders of residents of Osage after big oil deposits were found beneath their land. The book gives an account of the newly formed FBI and its investigations. The trails that followed and the eventual conviction of the mastermind William Hale.
Although the deals are yet to be signed and we still don’t have a production date, we are eagerly awaiting this DiCaprio – Scorsese movie which also stars Jennifer Lawrence.
