It’s time for Timothee Chalamet’s Willy Wonka!
The 25-year-old star shared the first look in character as a chocolate maker from the highly anticipated 2023 film on Sunday (October 10). Taking to Instagram, Chalamet gave fans their first look at his character in the upcoming film, Wonka — and let’s just say that he looked really handsome dressed in his red velvet coat and brown top hat.
“The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last …🏭WONKA🍫,” he captioned the post.
On a second Instagram slide, he posted a look at Wonka’s walking cane — made of wood and brass, with the top opening to reveal a purple and red wrapped present inside.
Timothee Chalamet is set to portray young Willy Wonka in the new movie from Warner Bros. and the Roald Dahl Story Co.
Chalamet’s role was previously played by Johnny Depp in 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Gene Wilder in 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He will also be singing and dancing in the film just like Wilder did.
With Timothee Chalamet casted to play the lead, the original cast of 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory shared their thoughts with People.
PEOPLE interviewed Peter Ostrum (Charlie Bucket), Julie Dawn Cole (Veruca Salt), Paris Themmen (Mike Teevee) and Michael Bollner (Augustus Gloop) amid the iconic fantasy film’s 50th anniversary, this year in July, where they shared their views about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, as well as the upcoming Timothée Chalamet-led Wonka prequel.
“Johnny Depp’s version actually kind of helped our film,” Ostrum, 63, said of 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Tim Burton. “Parents saw that film with their kids and their kids had never seen the original and the parents’ reaction was, ‘This was nice, but you need to see the original.’ It brought the original film back to the forefront again. And introduced a whole new generation — a whole new audience to the original film.”
Ostrum also said that “the prequel will shed more light on early Wonka.”
But again, there’s been so many different versions of Willy Wonka, be it on Broadway, opera, a pinball machine … you can’t kill the Willy Wonka story. So all of it is good. It’s a great story. And people enjoy whatever different version they’re watching; it’s fun to watch. So I think we’re all looking forward to the prequel.”
Upon his look reveal, fans couldn’t contain their excitement.
“OH MY GOD,” actress Kiernan Shipka commented, as another fan added, “I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO EXCITED FOR ANYTHING.”
A third fan also quipped, “OMG THIS IS EVEN BETTER THAN I IMAGINED. 👏👏👏👏.”
One Twitter user called it “an extremely promising first look at Timothee Chalamet as the younger Willy Wonka. I love the costume design & detail so far. You have my attention…”
“When I die bury me in his cheekbones,” wrote another Twitter user.
Later this month, Chalamet will be seen in the upcoming Dune.
