Netflix has announced its most ambitious project to date- a $200 million spy thriller, The Gray Man, starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, with the makers of the box-office record buster Avengers: Endgame Joe and Anthony Russo directing it. The reason behind this mammoth investment and A-list star-cast?- Netflix wants to build its own multi-film version of the James Bond franchise. So, yeah, to anyone (we!) who had been secretly gunning for a Gosling-Evan starrer- dreams do come true, mate!
The Gray Man will be an adaptation of Mark Greaney’s The Gray Man series of books (2009) about a freelance assassin and former CIA operative named Court Gentry who is known as a “legend in the covert realm.”
We will be seeing Ryan Gosling bringing the badass Court Gentry to life in this guaranteed action thriller, where he will be busy eluding the ruthless Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former member of Gentry’s team at the CIA who is hunting him across the world, deadset on catching him, at all costs.
As Netflix plans to transform this one-film deal into a franchise, if The Gray Man turns in favourable reviews, we can count on Ryan Gosling reprising his role in future instalments and going by the fact that there are 10 books (and more coming) in the series, there will be many sequels to look forward to!
The script for The Gray Man has been written by Joe Russo, who will be directing and producing the film (via their production house, AGBO) with his brother Anthony Russo.
The Gray Man will be a “real mano a mano between those two great actors who represent two different versions of the CIA, in what it can be, and what it can do,” as shared by Anthony Russo with Deadline.
“For those who were fans of Captain America: Winter Soldier, this is us moving into that territory in more of a real-world setting,” he continued. “That’s what this movie really means for us.”
For Joe Russo, to create a film that is “competitive with any theatrical [movie]” and to be able to do that with “Gosling and Evans is a dream for us.”
“The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe with Ryan at the centre of it. We have all committed to the first movie, and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie,” Joe said. “We think Netflix is the perfect place for this film.”
The Russo brothers are currently enjoying the success of their Chris Hemsworth-starrer Extraction that debuted on Netflix amidst the lockdown and soon became the most-watched original film on the platform, thus spawning a sequel, which is currently underway.
