Ever since Disney acquired 20th century Fox, the future of Deadpool 3 appeared bleak. While Marvel Studios has an excellent tracklist of superhero flicks that have managed to write their own legacy with their immense success, they have never really ventured into gritty and gory films like the Ryan Reynold’s starrer that have their own brand of no-filter witty humour. Fans of the films were afraid that the acquisition doesn’t bode well for the future of Deadpool 3 but Marvel Boss Kevin Feige has finally put all speculations to rest- it is happening and what’s even better is that it will keep its R-Rating!
“It (Deadpool 3) will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now…” Feige told Collider. “It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”
Post the announcement, Ryan Reynold’s also took to Twitter to confirm the news of Deadpool 3 officially becoming an MCU film with a classic display of his usual witty humour by writing this as the caption of a screenshot of the news: “First order of business: Find the guy who killed Bambi’s mom. #Deadpool3.”
In mid-2020, as the Marvel Studios kept mum about making Deadpool 3, Rob Liefeld, who co-created the foul-mouthed vigilante, expressed doubts that Disney may have no further plans for Wade Wilson and will perhaps end his story.
“You know what? There may not be another Deadpool, and I’m fine. Because I have to live with the fact that I had two amazing experiences, two movies I’m extremely proud of, I love knowing everybody on those movies. I love Ryan [Reynolds], Josh [Brolin], Zazie [Beets], David [Leitch], Tim Miller. All of them. The work they did was fantabulous, those movies are here to stand the test of time. You know, but in the world we live in, nothing is guaranteed. And it takes a lot to make movies. And post-quarantine, it’s weird,” he had shared.
As of now, only Ryan Reynolds’ return as Wade Wilson/Deadpool has been confirmed for Deadpool 3 as no information is available whether Josh Brolin’s Cable, Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa and other characters from the first two films will return or not. The film will be penned by Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and will possibly begin filming in 2022 because of Reynolds’ packed schedule and Marvel Studios’ overflowing calendar with tons of films and series waiting to be released.
