The revelations concerning the next Thor film have kept their constant stream. After Natalie Portman confirmed earlier in October that Thor: Love and Thunder will depict her character based on the highly acclaimed The Mighty Thor comics series, we now have our hands on the working title for the Taika Waititi‘s feature. And there are high chances that it’s either a hilarious callback or MCU is planning to undo the most impactful part of Avengers: Endgame– Thor being overweight.
The nifty little detail has been leaked by the editor-in-chief, Sklyer Shuler, of the Disney fansite The DisInsider, who shared that Thor: Love and Thunder is being developed under the working title “The Big Salad.”
On a totally unrelated-to-Marvel level, the wordplay is a reference to a popular Seinfeld episode called “The Big Sala.” In the episode, George buys Elaine, well a big salad but when he thanks his girlfriend who merely hands him the salad instead of George, the latter losses it and becomes obsessed with getting credit for his good deed. The drama leads to chaos which ends in arguments and obviously breakup.
But for even the most basic Marvel fan, the working title for Thor: Love and Thunder holds another meaning– it’s a homage to Thor being overweight in Avengers: Endgame, especially to the scene where the God of Thunder goes back in time and has a tearful reunion with his mother Queen Friga. Even though she knows that she’ll soon die, she helps her son overcome his depression over not stipping Thanos snapping away half the beings in the universe, along with the plea to “eat a salad” to rein in his extensive weight gain.
Although, the title could also mean that Marvel will be revoking Thor’s extra pounds before or during Thor: Love and Thunder. But this would only serve to spoil one of the most powerful moments in Endgame. While the last Avengers film faced some heat for making Thor the butt of jokes over his weight gain, it made peace by making him magically revert back to his muscled physique when he regains his powers by the end. It is an impactful scene which deftly calls out every film and shows that has always sidelined the plus-sized people from the main action.
But if Thor: Love and Thunder goes back on one of its revolutionary decisions, it will just leave what Endgame was panned for i.e., Thor was only made overweight as a comic element and so that Tony could crack some jokes at his expense. For now, it’s all theories and predictions as the film is yet to begin production to make it to its re-scheduled release date of 11th February 2022.
Helmed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder will see Chris Hemsworth reprising his character of Thor, Tessa Thompson will be seen as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Lady Thor.
