Despite all the delays and major drama surrounding Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, the film has debuted as one of the highest-grossing films of 2021. Those wondering about the monumental cliffhanger that Dune ended with don’t have to fret much as seeing the massive success of the first film, Warner Bros. has already confirmed a sequel to the film. Scroll down below to find out more details about the upcoming adventures of Timothee Chalamet’s Paul Atreides in Dune Part Two.
The plot of Dune Part Two
At the end of Dune Part One, we saw Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho, Dr. Liet Kynes (Sharon Duncan Brewster), and several other Fremen sacrifice themselves to allow Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and Paul to escape. The duo manages to reach the deep desert where they meet up the Fremen (including the girl in Paul’s visions, Chani (Zendaya)), with whom they travel to their home city. Though Jessica is against it, Paul joins the Fremen to begin completing his father’s dream- to make Arrakis peaceful again. After seeing Paul closely observing a Fremen member riding a sandstorm, it can be said with certainty that Dune Part Two will have a sandstorm-riding Timothee Chalamet.
As we don’t want to spoil Dune Part Two for you, all we can divulge about its plot based on the novel (unless you’ve already devoured it) is that the film will see Paul progressing and amping up his authority within the ranks of the Fremen. The film’s plot will also see him aiding the rebellion against Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV.
What’s the film’s release date?
While normally we would have to wait for months for the production of Dune Part Two (the working title) to begin to even get a tentative release date, this next Denis Villeneuve’s directed project already has a theatrical debut date- October 20, 2023. But while Warner Bros. waited for Dune Part One’s release and observed its meteoric rise at the box office before confirming its sequel, Villeneuve was always confident that it would happen.
“The first thing was to prove that there was a beautiful, popular movie that can exist, and I think that I proved that — everybody at Warner Bros and Legendary, they are 100 percent behind the project. They feel that it would need a really bad outcome at the box office to not have a Dune Part Two, because they love the movie. They are proud of the movie, so they want the movie to move forward. And they still did half of it. So, you know, I’m very optimistic,” Villeneuve shared with Total Film in August 2021.
If Warner Bros. plans to stick to its late 2023 release date, filming of Dune Part Two will have to begin sometime in early to mid-2022.
“It’s fantastic news, but it’s also kind of a burden… the good news is that a lot of the work has been done already regarding design, casting, locations and writing. So we’re not starting from scratch. It’s not a long period of time, but I will try to face that challenge because it’s important for me that the audience sees Part Two as soon as possible. It’s not a sequel where it’s another episode or another story with the same characters. It actually has direct continuity to the first movie. It’s the second part of the big huge movie that I’m trying to do. So the sooner the better,” Villeneuve told The Hollywood Reporter after Dune 2’s official announcement.
Also, unlike the original, the sequel is destined to have an exclusive theatrical release which will appease its director who has aired his displeasure regarding the same day HBO Max and theatrical release of Dune.
The cast of Dune Part Two
Apart from the release date of the film, not many details about Dune Part Two are known. But based on the first film and the remaining novel, we can guess the new and returning characters for the film. We will definitely be seeing Zendaya’s Chani in the film who will have a bigger, more central role to play in Part Two. Even Villeneuve has confirmed that the sequel, which will obviously bring Timothee Chalamet’s Paul back, will see Zendaya as a co-lead while her relationship with Paul will be a significant part of the plot.
Dune Part Two will also feature Rebecca Ferguson’s return as Lady Jessica. Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, and Dave Bautista as the Baron’s nephew Glossu Rabban. As Paul Atreides will be going up against the villainous Emperor Shaddam IV in the sequel, we will be seeing a new actor join the cast. As for Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho, while he seemingly perished at the end of Dune Part One, if Villeneuve follows the book’s storyline, there is still a chance for his return.
