The much-awaited Aquaman 2 is finally happening but fans aren’t entirely happy. After the reveal of the official title of Aquaman 2, requests demanding boycott of Amber Heard have resurfaced again.
Director James Wan dropped a major update on the movie on Thursday with the reveal of the official title “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “While fans were happy to know the film is entering pre-production, others started targeting Warner Bros. for not firing Amber Heard. Her name quickly began trending on Twitter, but not for the reasons Warner Bros. was hoping for.
Now, nearly 1.85 million people have signed an online petition for the studio to fire Amber Heard from Aquaman 2.
However, Warner Bros. seems to be looking the other way. The film is to start production this summer, and Heard has already been training to slip back into the role of Mera for the sequel. Fueling the fire is the fact that Depp was previously fired by Warner Bros. from J.K Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise.
Those consistently calling for “Justice for Johnny Depp” aren’t willing to let this go quite so easily. The disapproval of the casting is quite evident on social media.
One of the fans wrote : “johnny depp being fired from his movies for abuse allegations that have been confuted over and over again but amber heard can remain in her movies when she is a self confessed abuser is the biggest injustice i have ever seen in my life.”
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp married in 2015, with the actress filing for divorce a year later. Heard also filed for a restraining order on the Pirates of the Caribbean actor allegedly due to incidents of domestic abuse throughout their relationship. Due to Heard’s claims, Depp eventually lost some major roles in Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts franchises.
In the ongoing legal battle, the actor’s lawyers then found evidence in support of Depp’s innocence. It includes audio tapes of Heard allegedly admitting to being violent toward him. This has since swayed public opinion largely in Depp’s favor and spawned the #JusticeForJohnnyDepp movement.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled for release on Dec. 16, 2022 while Warner Bros. is yet to comment on the backlash.
