Jared Leto Ditches The Garb Of DC’s Joker To Become Marvel’s Buff Blood-Sucker “Morbius”

So, who else is super excited?

Rumors of DC’s Suicide Squad actor Jared Leto of feeling alienated and upset by the giant production house favoring Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker over his previous adaptation of the character had been doing the rounds for quite some time now. And now the news has been cemented with the release of Morbius’ teaser, featuring Jared Leto as the marginally less famous anti-hero from the Spiderman Universe.

The almost 3-minute teaser trailer for Morbius features Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius suffering from a rare blood disorder which is only getting worse with time. Continuing as the tragically flawed character he has been in the comics, Morbius develops pseudo-vampiric superhuman abilities after a failed experiment to cure himself.

“One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius,” the official description reads. “Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.”

Morbius is based on the lesser-known Marvel comic character of the same name, who made his first appearance as a villain in the Spider-Man comics, issue no. 101 in 1971. He is a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist who gains vampire-ish powers like superhuman strength, echolocation, and hypnosis but is not actually a vampire- a Dracula-like characteristic. So, Morbius is like a “pseudo-vampire,” like the limitations and weaknesses a vampire is bounded by isn’t necessarily what rules his vampiric tendencies.

Staying to the comic-version, Morbius will feature the obscure scientist as the “vampire, but not really” thing. The teaser presents Adria Arjona of Good Omens as Dr. Morbius’ fiancée Martine and Matt Smith from Doctor Who as his buddy Loxias Crown suffering from a similar blood disorder.

Apart from Jared Leto starring in the titular character with some seriously buffed-up muscles, the film also stars Tyrese Gibson, J.K. Simmons, and possibly Michael Keaton reprising his role as Adrian Toomes/The Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. We also witness a graffiti of Spiderman, with the word murderersplashed across it, probably referring to  Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) framing Spider-Man for his death in Spiderman: Far From Home. So, it sets Morbius after the second film of the webbed superhero but before the events of Spiderman 3 that’s in the works.

Morbius is set to open in theaters on July 31, 2020.
