Sony Pictures announced Monday that it has postponed the release of Morbius once again due to the ongoing pandemic.
After several delays, the makers had finally settled on a March 19, 2021 release date for the Jared Leto starrer comic thriller. However, the movie will now premiere in theaters on October 8.
Morbius’ new release date of October 8 is more than 14 months after the original one. The film was initially set to hit theaters in the July of 2020.
Meanwhile, there’s another Sony film, the Camila Cabello starrer Cinderella, which is scheduled to release on February 5, 2021. The production company, however, did not reveal any plans of postponing it in its recent announcement.
Given the aggravating COVID-19 crisis, it remains unlikely that Cinderella would stick to its February release date, unless it is released digitally.
Moreover, with Morbius’ release date pushed back, the fate of Venom: Let There Be Carnage also remains uncertain. The Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson starrer is slated to release on June 25, 2021, but it may see delays as well.
What is Jared Leto’s Morbius about?
The movie is directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. It is based on the Marvel Comics character Michael Morbius – a biochemist who turns into a vampire after an experiment to cure himself of a chronic illness goes wrong.
Morbius was first introduced in the The Amazing Spider-man #101 comic as a villain. Over the years, his role was changed and he came across more as an antihero, much like Venom and The Punisher.
“Morbius, the man, is a pretty complex character. That’s what I was really attracted to,” Leto said in a conversation with IGN. “This is somebody who has a lot of conflict in his life.”
“He’s a guy who’s born with this horrible disease and is really a gifted person. When he was young, he was very curious about science and medicine and decided to dedicate his life to find a cure for the disease that he’s afflicted with and that others like him have, as well. But along the way, all hell breaks loose.”
“There’s a line in the film where Morbius says that he’s been dying his entire life and now feels more alive than ever. And I think that sums it up,” Leto added. That’s an interesting way to put it!
Well, let’s just hope there are no more changes in Morbius’ release date!
