Jason Momoa And Dave Bautista Action-Comedy Twitter Pitch Lands At MGM

Less than two months after Dave Bautista tweeted a movie idea.

Less than two months after Dave Bautista tweeted a movie idea he had to star alongside Jason Momoa, the project has become a reality. MGM is expected to come out on top in the bidding war for an untitled buddy action comedy set to star Bautista and Momoa.

The deal for the project is expected to close by Friday morning, with the studio set to develop the idea further, though no director is attached.

Jonathan Tropper is on screenwriting duties, who also penned the script for Shawn Levy’s upcoming movie The Adam Project, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, and Zoe Saldana.

The project doesn’t have a director yet, although Bautista threw David Leitch’s name into the mix in his original Twitter pitch: “Just going to throw this out into the atmosphere and see what happens,” he tweeted earlier this year. “Here we go… Me and Momoa in a Lethal Weapon type buddy cop movie directed by David Leitch. Ok! There it is. Now we wait.”

Momoa responded a few days later on The Late Late Show, telling host James Corden: ” ‘I’m not even going to lie to you. I’m not on Twitter, but he literally texted me about four days ago going, ‘We need to do a buddy cop film.’ We love each other. We obviously met on See, we’re on Dune together, and so I said, ‘Absolutely.'”

He added that Bautista suggested they make the movie in Hawaii, and Momoa responded, ‘Let’s do it.’

“So, it’s off to the races now. We’re doing it,” he added, as Corden joked that this is what happens when you’re Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista.

“It sells itself. Dave loves wearing speedos, I love wearing board shorts and both of us with our shirts off [in a] buddy cop film, he’ll be grumpy and I’ll be charming. Boom. I’ve got the hair, he doesn’t have hair. We cover all the demographics,” Momoa added, but when asked about a title, he said, ‘I’ll leave that to other people.’

Per reports, they hope to film this untitled project in 2023, since Momoa is busy filming Aquaman 2 and Bautista is filming Guardians of the Galaxy 3, with a Dune sequel also in the works.
