When it comes to reboots in Hollywood, the report isn’t that bright. From Terminator to Charlie’s Angel to The Amazing Spiderman (sans the perfect Gwen Stacy it cast), the majority of these reboots have been fat disappointments. But when you have Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in a movie, you pretty much seal its fate to be a stellar success, thus it comes as no surprise that his most recent movie Jumanji: The Next Level has now made over $800 million at the global box office!
Jumanji: The Next Level, starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan, released in 2019 and broke earlier notions of comedy releases in December, especially the ones involving an ensemble cast, failing at the box office. It had an all-time record opening weekend in North America and had a strong 13 weeks run before cinema theaters across the globe were shut down in March owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
So, when we say that Jumanji: The Next Level currently stands at $319.2M domestically and $480.9M at the international box office, it shows that had the pandemic not struck, it would have been one of Sony Pictures over-a-billion-dollar-earning hit projects.
But nonetheless. Sony has made the big news official, that Jumanji: The Next Level has passed $800 million in worldwide box office earnings. Given the fact that it was made on a budget of $120 million, the Jake Kasdan-directed and Dwayne Johnson-co-produced flick joins the equally successful first film in the rebooted Jumanji series, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which earned $404 million domestic and $962 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. One of Sony’s successful reboots, no doubts.
And obviously, when Dwayne Johnson heard the news, he was beyond ecstatic!
“This was a nice surprising call to get this morning,” he wrote in his Instagram post, along with a snap of the story about the milestone. “JUMANJI’s still going strong.”
He then proceeded to thank his millions of fans for their continued support and making Jumanji: The Next Level a box-office hit.
“I’m always grateful to see our JUMANJI having that unique, fun magic and mana for families around the (world) to enjoy,” he said. “Our entire team will work even harder to make the next JUMANJI the best one yet.”
With that last line, Dwayne Johnson not only erased any doubts regarding Jumanji 4 being in the pipeline but also triggered ardent fans of the franchise to daydream of what is to come in the next chapter. One fan, in particular, a former “bloodthirsty” heartthrob, couldn’t help but slip in a request to star in the next adventure- Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder.
“Congrats man!” Ian wrote on Dwayne’s post. “Umm, can I be in the next one?!”
Yes, Dwayne Johnson, can he? *flutters eyelashes*
