Kevin Hart Reportedly In Talks To Join ‘Borderlands’ Opposite Cate Blanchett

Is it true?!

Ever since its announcement in 2015, the movie adaptation of the Borderlands video game has been in development hell as it continued to be plagued by multiple delays. Even as it picked up in 2020 with the announcements that a) Eli Roth has been signed on to direct the film and b) the official announcement of Cate Blanchett’s addition to the film, the production once again came to a halt with the coronavirus pandemic. But it appears that it has picked up its pace again as reports have cropped up that comedian-actor Kevin Hart is reportedly in talks to join the film as the live-action version of the video game character Roland.

So, what is officially confirmed about Borderlands?

What we know for sure is that Eli Roth, who is best known for his horror films like Cabin Fever and Hostel, will be directing the film.

“I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio,” said Roth. “We are out to make a new classic, one which the fans of the game will love, but also one which will find new audiences globally.”

The film is set to be produced by Lionsgate along with Avi and Ari Arad. The script for the film has been penned by Craig Mazin, who is also the brains behind the hit HBO series The Last of Us

The film will loosely follow the story presented in the role-playing video game wherein people search for a mysterious relic on the abandoned planet of Pandora. After being plundered relentlessly, the land is now without laws but once the mystical Vaults were discovered, the larger corporations responsible for its state return to steal it too.

As of now, only Oscar-winning Cate Blanchett has officially signed up for the Borderlands film and is set to play the character of Lilith, the game’s protagonist who is going to be “a spunky, nerdy warrior and powerful magic-user known as a Siren, whose abilities include the powers of flight and invisibility.”

Now, news of Kevin Hart joining Borderlands is doing the rounds

The news has been reported by The Illuminerdi who has claimed that Kevin Hart is in talks to appear as the fan-favourite character Roland who is “a decent man and grizzled veteran, as well as a former member of the Crimson Lance who now operates as a soldier.”

If the news is indeed true, not only will Borderlands be a major star-driven film adaptation but will also present the seasoned comedian in a role different from his usual goofy characters

Fans of the game know how crucial Roland ends up becoming to the centre storyline, which makes Kevin Hart the second protagonist in the film. In the video game, Roland often groups with other characters to fend off enemies, with Lilith playing his love interest. As Cate Blanchett and Hart haven’t starred opposite each other before, Borderlands would mark the first time the stars will be seen together, if the reports are accurate.
