Mads Mikkelsen On How He Was ‘Invited To Create’ His Character In Indiana Jones 5

It was “everything he wished it to be.”

After being in development hell for over a decade, Indiana Jones 5 is finally happening, with Harrison Ford returning to essay the title role. Till now, only three more actors have joined the cast of the film- Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Thomas Kretschmann, and of course, the amazing Mad Mikkelsen. And in case you have any doubts about the merits of the film, Mikkelsen has assured that the script of Indiana Jones 5 is “everything I wished it to be.”

In a recent chat with Collider, Mads Mikkelsen shared how excited he is about being a part of Indiana Jones 5.

“I’m very, very excited about it… I rewatched Raiders of the Lost Ark the other day, it is so well-done and so charming, and it’s such great storytelling. So yes it’s a great honor to be part of that franchise that I grew up with… I’m in a lucky position where they let me read the script before. And yes, it was everything I wished it to be, so that was just great,” Mads Mikkelsen shared.

And the best thing, according to Mads Mikkelsen, is that he wasn’t just hired to play a part but also approached to create his character in Indiana Jones 5.

“I do think I’m invited in to create a character, I think that everybody wants that. That’s why they pick certain actors that they think can come up with certain things, and it will be a collaboration as it always is. Interesting enough, again a little like Riders of Justice, there is kind of a genre mix in Indiana Jones always. There is something that is a little larger-than-life, almost back to the 30s with a Peter Lorre kind of feel, and then you have Indiana Jones who kind of is a straight man. But he does produce a lot of funny and interesting things, but there are different character genres in some of those films,” Mads Mikkelsen added.

Indiana Jones 5 isn’t going to be Mad Mikkelsen’s first franchise film as he worked in numerous established and renowned cinematic universes like Casino Royale, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in MCU Doctor Strange, and will also be seen as Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them 3, after replacing Johnny Depp as the dark wizard. His 2020 film, Another Round, recently won the Best International Feature Award at the Oscars 2021.

Unlike the previous Indiana Jones films, Steven Spielberg is only attached to the project as a “hands on” producer and Indiana Jones 5 will instead be produced by James Mangold who is popularly known for his films Academy Award-nominated films Logan and Ford v Ferrari. Apart from Spielberg Ford, John Williams is also returning to the franchise to compose the score for the fifth film.
