Margot Robbie As Lead In A Never Before Seen Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie

The Pirates of the Caribbean are ready to sail towards a whole new venture!

Suicide Squad actress Margot Robbie has been roped in as the female lead in a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Christina Hodson, the prolific screenwriter of films like Birds of Prey and Batgirl, was tapped to pen the screenplay for this new swashbuckler film.

While plot details are under wraps, the new installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is “not intended to be a spinoff of the long-running franchise.. But rather a wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker,” as per Hollywood Reporter.

The “female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean” is also different from the previously announced reboot of the franchise. The latter is being developed by Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and reportedly stars Karen Gillan as the female lead. Jerry Bruckheimer will produce both the projects.

The news is in tandem with Hollywood’s latest trend to re-make some classic movies with strong female characters, much like the 2016 Ghostbusters starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett’s 2018 Ocean’s 8.

But what’s some news without a little backlash?

Johnny Depp has been the heart and soul of Pirates movies ever since the first one in 2003. Although his latest Dead Men Tell No Tales failed to do the expected numbers, when one thinks of Pirates of the Caribbean, the first image that comes to mind is of Johnny Depp’s eccentric Jack Sparrow.

There is no information as yet about whether the infamous Jack Sparrow will be a part of Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean, and Depp’s fans couldn’t be more displeased with the announcement, with some vowing to boycott the film entirely.

“It’s simple .. if the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie has no Captain Jack Sparrow, no Johnny Depp, I’m not watching it,” wrote one fan, while another wrote, “I would just like to point out that I’m not against Margot Robbie starring in a Pirates Of The Caribbean movie. I just think she should be starring along side Johnny Depp who made the franchise what it is.”

Pirates is one of the most bankable film franchises, but with every sequel, the profit started to reduce. Perhaps the two new movies are an attempt to save the dying brand. Whatever the case may be, with such progressive movies in the works, the future is certainly female!
