Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem are being considered to star as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in an Aaron Sorkin directed movie, ‘Being the Ricardos’ which will be based on the lives of the legendary actors from the 50s.
The storyline would follow the iconic Hollywood couple as they face a crisis that could jeopardize their careers and create rifts in their marriage during their time filming their popular sitcom ‘I Love Lucy’, as reported by Deadline.
Aaron Sorkin has written the screenplay and is all set to direct the film for Amazon Studios and Escape artists. Covid-19 has put brakes on the production but it may start off with a table read in the near future. Aaron Sorkin has just released “The Trial of Chicago 7” on Netflix, which has its hopes up for an Oscar nomination. Aaron Sorkin had earlier shown interest in Cate Blanchett to play Lucille Ball before Nicole Kidman started being eyed for the role.
Looking Back at ‘I Love Lucy’
‘I Love Lucy’ aired on CBS from 1951 to 1957 – spread across six seasons. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz starred as the married couple Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. The storyline followed the couple as Lucy tries various schemes to be a part of showbusiness through Ricky’s nightclub.
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz got married in 1940, before filming the show, and shared two kids together- a daughter Lucie Arnaz, 69, and son Desi Arnaz Jr., 67.
In 1950, Lucille Ball was starring on the radio with actor Richard Denning in the show ‘My Favorite Husband’- a popular CBS show of the time. When the network launched a version of the show for television, it was on Ball’s insistence that Arnaz, a nightclub bartender, was cast as her spouse on- screen. The show also featured Vivian Vance and William Frawley who played Ethel and Fred Mertz- as Lucy’s best friends.
The show turned out to be a huge success but it took a toll on the couple’s marriage and they finally sought divorce in 1960. “It got so bad that I thought it would be better for us not to be together,” Ball said in court.
The couple separated but enjoyed fulfilling marriages with different people. Lucille was married to comedian Gary Morton for 28 years while Desi sold his share of Desilu Studios to Ball and married his neighbor, Edith Hirsch.
“I think she always loved him. And there’s no question that he loved her always. Later, he married her double. Edie (Hirsch) was a marvelous girl in her own right, but she sure as hell looked like Lucy,” the ‘I Love Lucy’ director William Asher had told People in an interview in 1991.
It is unclear what parts of their life would be explored in the movie but for now, the iconic couple may be brought to life by Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem.
Nicole Kidman was last seen in the HBO series ‘The Undoing’ , Netflix’s ‘The Prom‘, and will be featuring in ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ for Hulu. Javier Bardem is set to appear in Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated film ‘Dune’, and Disney’s live-action movie, ‘the Little Mermaid.’
