The trailer for Shakuntala Devi was just released and sees Vidya Balan being her best quirky and confident self.
The biopic follows the journey of maths genius Shakuntala Devi (played by Vidya). Albeit coming from a humble background, Shakuntala Devi went on to become a world famous maths wizard and was popularly called the “human computer”.
She created a spot for herself in the Guinness Book of Records, solving as she did a 13-digit-multiplication mentally within 28 seconds.
But as Shakuntala Devi’s trailer unveils, the movie is not just about the genius Shakuntala, but also about the wife and the mother in her.
The two and a half minute trailer opens with Vidya Balan and her humourous antics that instantly make us love her character. It then gives a little flashback as it shows a little Shakuntala expressing to her father her wish to attend school.
And the story only goes onwards and upwards from there. Shakuntala continues to win accolades and praises for her exceptional computational skills. She brings out a “How do you do this?” from almost every person she meets.
But the struggle begins when she has to juggle between her passion and her family. Clashes between her and her daughter (played by Sanya Malhotra) begin and hint at all the drama that would follow. As Vidya rightly says at the end of the trailer, “we Indians are like that only. Drama or nothing.”
“Stepping into the world of Shakuntala Devi was as intimidating as it was exhilarating”, actress Vidya Balan said.
“Her story is inspirational and makes you see how if we believe in ourselves, the world is our oyster.”
“I’ve always been fascinated by Shakuntala Devi and felt hers is an incredible story that resonates with today’s world,” said director Anu Menon.
“While most of us will be familiar with her natural ability for math, the film also explores the lesser-known personal story of a brilliant but vulnerable woman and mother who lived life ahead of her times and on her own terms.”
Besides Vidya Balan, the film stars Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh, Jisshu Sengupta among others. It releases on Amazon Prime Video on July 31, 2020.
With easy but witty dialogues like “Why be normal, when I can be amazing?”, an inspiring and substantial story and Vidya Balan’s thirst for perfection, Shakuntala Devi promises to be a good watch!
