Jason Sudeikis plays Jimmy, a man who receives early release after an armed robbery and vows to give his dying girlfriend Annie (Evangeline Lilly) a fantastic last year in the South of Heaven trailer.

Sudeikis, on the other hand, is thrust back into the criminal world, where he clashes with his parole officer (Shea Whigham) and a crime leader (Mike Colter).

South of Heaven promises to show us a fresh side of Jason Sudeikis, who is most known for his lighter performances on Ted Lasso, Saturday Night Live, and Horrible Bosses. Sudeikis is frightening and vengeful in a way we’ve never seen him before as he seeks to shield the love of his life from the impending danger. This appears to be a terrific opportunity for Lilly to do more dramatic work, as well as a meaty evil role for Whigham and Colter.

The trailer for South of Heaven, directed by Aharon Keshales, who also directed 2013’s Big Bad Wolves and a section of 2014’s ABCs of Death 2, certainly knows how to establish a creeping tension that borders on terror.

The official synopsis reads, “Convicted felon Jimmy gets early parole after serving twelve years for armed robbery. Upon his release, he vows to give his girlfriend Annie, who is dying of cancer, the best last year of her life. But things are never that simple, and when he is given a ‘side job’ from his parole officer, it sets off a series of events that leaves Jimmy in the crosshairs of a local crime boss. Now, he must stop at nothing to save Annie and fight for whatever time they have left.”

Sudeikis is currently nominated for four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Writing, for his acclaimed lead performance as Ted Lasso in the Apple TV+ comedy series. Meanwhile, Lilly is working on Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is set to be released in 2023.
