The Matrix 4: Release Date, Confirmed Cast And How Keanu Reeves’ Neo Will Return

Ready to plug back into the Matrix?

The Matrix: Reloaded, starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, released back in 2003 and gave a fitting closure to its storyline of an apocalyptic world where humans and machines co-exist. And while fans of Neo and Trinity were left heartbroken over their tragic demise to bring about peace, the end gave us hope that we will, at least, get to see Mr. Anderson again– a dream that is going to become real with the sequel, The Matrix 4.

Knowing that you are psyched to get your hands on any news about the upcoming The Matrix 4, here is all we know about the sequel that will bring Keanu Reeves back to the silver screen as the digital messiah:

When did The Matrix 4 begin filming?

Though initially the filming was hampered owing to the worldwide pandemic, the cast resumed shooting in Berlin in early July, where Keanu Reeves was spotted with his co-stars.

Unlike the first three films in the franchise, which had sisters Lilly and Lana Wachowski at the helm, only Lana is returning to co-write The Matrix 4, along with writer Aleksandar Hemon (Love Island) and David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas) and will be directing this new chapter in the Matrix Universe by herself.

The returning cast and the new faces

Along with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith is reportedly in talks to reprise her role of Niobe, while Lambert Wilson is rumoured to be returning as The Merovingian for The Matrix 4. But Laurence Fishburne has confirmed that he has “not been invited” to come back as the wise Morpheus who introduced Neo to the concept of the Matrix and guided him throughout the trilogy.

Several new faces will be joining the sequel in yet undisclosed roles- Iron Fist actress Jessica Henwick, the Mindhunter star Jonathan Groff, the former Spartacus star Ellen Hollman, Quantico alum Priyanka Chopra, and actor Neil Patrick Harris.  Aquaman’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen was one of the earliest additions to The Matrix 4 and though his character is currently unknown, it is rumoured that he has been roped in as a younger version of Morpheus.

How will The Matrix 4 “rejuvenate” Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss’ characters?

At the end of The Matrix Reloaded, Trinity died from her injuries in the hovercraft while Neo sacrificed himself to defeat the rogue program, Agent Smith. But the Oracle told Sati that they will see Neo again.

Given the leaked set photos of Keanu Reeves, Neo has seemingly ditched his black cyberpunk attire and is looking far from the messiah he had become, hinting at the possibility that his consciousness was uploaded back into the Matrix after he died and The Matrix 4 will begin with Neo as a regular human, unaware of his past.

When are we getting Keanu Reeves’ modern-Matrix-era Neo?

As the pandemic halted the production of The Matrix 4, the release date has been moved from 21st May 2021 to 2nd April 2022.
