Who would have thought that a star-studded MTV Video and Music Awards (VMAs) could take place, complete with electric performances, in today’s socially distanced reality? But the impossible did happen- the night of 30th August saw its first major live awards show, the MTV VMAs 2020, since the lockdown shut down the world, with the likes of Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, the Weeknd, and others that were shot across different locations in the city or in front of green screens but nevertheless still raising the din with their unforgettable performances!
Chloe X Halle
While fans wanted them to be part of the MTV VMAs 2020, the sister duo Chloe x Halle rocked up the pre-show with their remote performance of “Ungodly Hour,” the title track off their second album. Decked in matching metallic outfits, their amamzingly synchoronized performance was boasted by their silky smooth vocals and a remote stage lit up like the 4th of July.
Machine Gun Kelly
Machine Gun Kelly wrapped up pre-show with a groovy New York City rooftop performance of two songs from his upcoming album Tickets to My Downfall– “My Ex’s Best Friend” and “Bloody Valentine,” with his friends Travis Barker and Blackbear.
The 30-year-old rocked the first outdoor performance of MTV VMAs 2020 with a live rendition of his After Hours single “Blinding Lights” on the observation deck of the Edge building at Hudson Yards. Sporting the look from his After Hours cover and “Blinding Lights” video- red suit, black gloves, and scarred face– the Weeknd ended the stellar set with a massive fireworks display in the background.
Doja delivered one of the best VMAs debuts ever with performances on her songs “Say So” and “Like That”. She was clad in an alien-ish bodysuit with scales and surrounded by dancers who dressed to match the rising talent who set the stage on fire with her expressive vocals and a choreography that is guaranteed to impress.
Not only did Lady Gaga whisk away the majority of the MTV VMAs titles, she practically owned the stage with the performances of a medley of songs from her album Chromatica– “911,” “Rain on Me,” and “Stupid Love.” Her performance began on a Chromatica-themed stage, wherein she wore an assortment of lit-up masks, surrounded by masked dancers as well. She was later joined by Ariana Grande for their joined performance on their collab single “Rain on Me,” followed by Gaga’s amped-up set on her song “Stupid Love.”
Black Eyed Peas
The MTV VMAs 2020 closed the night with the group Black Eyed Peas’s smashing debut performance which included their 2009 hit “I Gotta Feeling” wherein Will.I.Am also called out to the events that have marked this year– “Wanna send love to the first responders and the freedom fighters,” and “Wakanda forever. Black Lives Matter.”
The group also performed “Vida Loca” from their latest album, Translation, but fans were mainly focused on Will.I.Am, Taboo and Apl.De.Ap’s pants, which stood out with their lit-up zippers.
