Scarlett Johansson Says Black Widow Was Treated Like A Piece Of Meat In Iron Man 2

“She is really talked about like she’s a piece of something.”

Scarlett Johansson reflects the journey of her Marvel character Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow. In a recent interview with Collider, she talked about how the Black Widow was s–ualized in the debut movie, Iron Man 2. She even said that her character was referred to “as a piece of meat” which seemed to be a compliment at that time. But over the years her character has evolved and so has she as an actress. Scarlett Johansson is all set to appear in her standalone movie, Black Widow, premiering on July 9.

Not So Empowering In the start for A Female Superhero

“All of that is related to that move away from the kind of hypers–ualization of this character and, I mean, you look at Iron Man 2 and while it was really fun and had a lot of great moments in it, the character is so s–ualized, you know? ” Johansson said about Black Widow debuting back in 2010. “[She is] really talked about like she’s a piece of something, like a possession or a thing or whatever – like a piece of ass, really. And [Tony Stark] even refers to her as something like that at one point … ‘I want some’ [says Tony] … and at one point calls her a piece of meat”

“And Maybe at that time that actually felt like a compliment. You know what I mean?” she added about Black Widow’s perspective at that time. “Because my thinking was different … My own self-worth was probably measured against that type of comment or, like a lot of young women, you come into your own and you understand your own self-worth. It’s changing now. Now people, young girls, are getting a much more positive message, but it’s been incredible to be a part of that shift and be able to come out the other side and be a part of that old story, but also progress. Evolve. I think it’s pretty cool.”

In Iron Man 2 Scarlett Johansson’s character Natasha Romanoff fights a boxing match with Tony Stark’s bodyguard Happy. While they are sparring, Tony dig details about her. She very easily takes Happy down in a move and impresses both Stark and Pepper. After signing a document with Stark she walks away. As Tony watches her going away he tells Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) “I want one,” and Pepper replies, “No.”

Scarlett Johansson as a Mother and her Marvel character Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson not only talked about Black Widow’s journey but she also reflected on herself as a mother. Johansson has a daughter, Rose Dorothy, 6, with ex-husband Romain Dauriac. “It definitely has changed and I think part of that change … is actually from me too, I’m a mom and my life is different. Obviously, 10 years have passed and things have happened and I have a much different, more evolved understanding of myself,” she said. “As a woman, I’m in a different place in my life, you know? … I’m more accepting of myself, I think.”

Johansson also talked about the upcoming release of Black Widow and why it took 10 years for a female superhero to get a standalone movie. “This movie would have been so different if we’d made it 10 years ago. It was a different time. I think we can all agree on that. A lot of people ask me why we didn’t do it before now, but in some ways – I’m sure there’s a lot of reasons for that – in some ways I’m actually very thankful that it’s happening now because we can actually make a movie that’s about real stuff and audiences want that.”
