A Deep Look At Grey’s Anatomy’s Emmy Nominations 2021 Snub

The show missed it, again!

One of the saddest snubs of the Emmy nominations 2021 was Grey’s Anatomy.

Ellen Pompeo’s much-loved medical drama received no love in the nominations, which were announced last Tuesday. It wasn’t nominated under any category.

The snub hit fans quite hard, who were expecting a least a few nominations for the show’s 17th season.

Despite being a massive hit and fan-favorite, Grey’s Anatomy didn’t receive a nomination for best drama series at Emmys 2021

The BoysBridgertonThe CrownThe Handmaid’s TaleLovecraft CountryThe MandalorianPose, and This Is Us bagged a nomination in the Outstanding Drama category.

This is not to say that these shows aren’t deserving, but Grey’s Anatomy’s snub did come as a shock.

Not just that, Ellen Pompeo wasn’t recognized for her role as Meredith Grey either. Season 17 of the show saw Meredith battling with a lot of problems including getting COVID-19.

The show incorporated a COVID-19 sub-plot to better suit today’s time and the audience.

But still, Pompeo missed the mark for Outstanding Lead Actress. Nominees in this category include Uzo Aduba (In Treatment), Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin (The Crown), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Mj Rodriguez (Pose), and Jurnee Smollett (Lovecraft Country).

Despite the series and her character being wildly popular, and despite receiving a lot of love for it over the years, Pompeo has never been nominated for an Emmy.

Fans were sure Patrick Dempsey would get a nomination

Patrick Dempsey played Dr. Derek Shepherd for the first 11 seasons of the show — before he was killed off in a car crash.

Much to fan’s surprise, Derek made an appearance in season 17 as a part of a dream sequence. Derek appeared in Meredith’s dream, as she came in and out of consciousness after a COVID-induced coma.

The surprise appearance made Dempsey eligible for an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

He was on the ballot for the category, along with T.R. Knight, who also made a surprise return in the same season.

Knight played George O’Malley on the show, before his character died in season 5.

There were only five spots in the category, and neither Dempsey nor Knight made it.

But let’s not lose hope. Grey Anatomy has been renewed for a season 18, and that might give them a chance to get a nomination. The show’s spinoff, Station 19, will also see a new season.
