Did The Mandalorian Season 2 Just Introduce A Game Of Thrones’ Monster?!

It sure looks like it!

In every aspect, The Mandalorian Season 2 is busy exceeding expectations and outperforming its Season 1 excellence. And that makes it so much harder to notice the subtle Easter Eggs that are hidden in its elaborate storyline this time around. Fans of the Disney+ would like to say that every reference it packs alludes to the overarching Star Wars franchise but looks like that this time around, The Mandalorian may have just reached out to another fictional show set on another faraway land as it’s episode 2, “The Passenger” includes what looks like an iconic monster from the Game Of Thrones!

The episode sees Mando (Pedro Pascal) and Baby Yoda (The Child), accompanied by an alien Frog lady, travelling to another galaxy. But Mando ends up wrecking his ship’s hull in an icy planet’s terrain. Here too, trouble awaits them as Baby Yoda accidentally angers a hive of giant ice-spiders that target the trio as they try to escape in the half-repaired ship.

Even Baby Yoda’s overwhelming cuteness wouldn’t have been enough to distract the viewers from gasping in surprise as the mother spider makes an appearance to attack the group. While it undoubtedly has connections to the larger Star Wars Universe as the said creatures, known as Krykna were last seen in the animated series Star War Rebels, it is hard to avoid the callout it seems to give to Game of Thrones’ White Walkers’ fabled monster rides.

In its first season, Old Nan narrated the story of Long Night to Bran Stark who was confined to his bed. The story tells about the White Walkers first appearance and how they “swept through cities and kingdoms, riding their dead horses, hunting with their packs of pale spiders big as hounds.” The series showrunners even planned on adding them to The Battle of Winterfell in season 8 but then dropped the idea as there was already too much going on and to that adding ice spiders who should look all realistically terrifying was just be an unnecessary task.

As for what gives more traction to the possibility of GoT spiders making an appearance in The Mandalorian Season 2 is the fact that series producer Jon Favreau, a certified Game of Thrones fan himself, has expressed his plans to make the Disney+ series more similar to it.

“The new season is about introducing a larger story in the world. The stories become less isolated, yet each episode has its own flavor, and hopefully, we’re bringing a lot more scope to the show. . . . As we introduce other characters, there are opportunities to follow different storylines. The world was really captivated by Game of Thrones and how that evolved as the characters followed different storylines — that’s very appealing to me as an audience member,” he told Entertainment Weekly

But, whether the scary arachnids are connected to GoT or the Star Wars franchise, we would definitely like to see more of them scuttling around The Mandalorian!
