‘Emily In Paris’ Deep Dish Pizza Rant was “Heartless”, Retorts Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria

Who Doesn’t Like Pizza?

Chicago’s famed deep-dish pizza chain Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria called out Netflix’s comedy-drama series, Emily In Paris which stars Lily Collins, for its banter.

Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria which serves its signature deep-dish pizza over 60 chains located all over Chicago, Arizona, Indiana, and Wisconsin, took Netflix series’ remark on their renowned pizza to heart and called out Emily In Paris yesterday on their Instagram. The pizzeria uploaded a meme of the series lead Emily played by Lily Collins standing with her mouth wide open, below a pic of their mouth-watering pizza which had the text “Hey Emily…jealous?” on it. The post was captioned with co-owner, Marc Malnati’s statement explaining why the pizza chain did not like the diss.

“We’ve been serving Chicago’s favourite Deep Dish since 1971. When Netflix’s Emily In Paris writers chose to take a shot at Chicagoans and our pizza to try to get a laugh, it felt heartless and not humorous in the midst of Covid-19.” – Marc Malnati. Thank you to all our fans who have shown so much love and support!”

What Was The Diss?

In the first episode of Emily In Paris, series protagonist Emily’s new French friends make a comment on their first time trying a deep-dish pizza, calling it “disgusting” and that it tasted “like a quiche made of cement.” to which Emily (Lily Collins) responds by reassuring them by saying “Oh, no, you must have gone to Lou Malnati’s.”

In a Press release, Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria also stated that their brand “is always the first to participate in good-natured banter with pizza lovers from New York or California,” and the joke that Emily In Paris made “feels especially unkind to disparage anyone during these difficult times, given that most restaurants are struggling to hang on.”

Netflix series’ Emily in Paris features Lily Collins playing the character of Emily, a 20-year-old social media marketer on the grind who decides to move to the city of love, Paris, in pursuit of a job as her company buys a small French Marketing Enterprise. The show which completed its first season stars Lily Collins in the lead alongside co-stars, Ashley Park, Philippine Leroy Beaulieu, Lucas Bravo, Samuel Arnold, Camille Razat, Bruno Gouery, Kate Walsh, William Abadie and Arnaud Viard.
