The Last of Us, HBO’s new & upcoming TV series, is based on the popular video-game of the same name by Naughty Dog, with quite a lot of money backing it, and the budget assigned for each episode is pretty high.
HBO’s TLOU, based on video-game developer Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic video game, The Last of Us, is said to have a massive budget of more than eight figures invested in each episode. Eight figures basically mean a $10 million budget, however, Damian Petti, head of IATSE 212, says that the money being invested into the show exceeds the already high budget of $10 million per episode.
“I can’t confirm the official budget figures, but I can say that this is the biggest project shot in Canada. This project exceeds the budget of eight figures per department, so it has multiple impacts in terms of its impact on our economy. Many businesses will benefit from this project
Damian Petti also added that the show is “a truly magnificent production”, and further adds that filming for the show will begin this month in the Canadian province of Alberta-
“There are 5 art directors and an army of technicians. In Alberta, there was 6 months of filming preparation, 12 months of filming.”
The budget is pretty high: TLOU will also feature ten episodes for its first season, turning up the notch on its budget, and making the first season alone cost at least a 100 million dollars to make. These figures are sure to make the show compete with other expensive television series such as Game Of Thrones and The Pacific. For comparison with the $10 million per episode budget of TLOU, Game Of Thrones had moved its budget from $10 million to $15 million per episode. Even the jointly-produced (by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks) 2010 WW2 series, The Pacific, had a whopping $200 million budget.
The casting for the TV series includes The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal playing the role of Joel, and Game Of Thrones star Bella Ramsey playing Ellie. Other notable cast members include Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, and Jeffrey Pierce as Perry.
Video-game developer Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic adventure game, The Last of Us, hit the markets in 2013, and it surely took the video-game market by storm. TLOU sold over 1.3 million units within seven days of it’s release, this feat made it the biggest video-game launch of that year. TLOU was also met with critical acclaim, with critics praising the game’s story writing (by Neil Druckmann), visuals, gameplay, and sound design.
It is no surprise that a video game of such stature got a TV adaptation, let alone have a massive budget going into millions. The TV adaptation of TLOU is set to air on HBO, a release date has not been announced yet.
