Sex and the City revival has been given the go ahead at HBO Max and fans cannot keep calm!
Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, better known as Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York, respectively, confirmed the big news on their socials.
Parker, Nixon and Davis will also executive produce with Michael Patrick King, who directed both the feature films and some episodes of the series.
Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones, did not post on her social media and will not be reprising her role in the revival. It remains to be known how Samantha’s absence will be played out in the reboot.
Created by Darren Star and based on Candace Bushnell’s 1997 book, Sex and the City had a successful run on HBO from 1998 to 2004. The show was then made into two films, Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010).
The rumours of a Sex and the City revival first started doing the rounds in December and loyal fans of the franchise couldn’t contain their excitement.
The reboot will be in the form of a limited series, which is titled And Just Like That, as HBO Max confirmed. It remains unclear when the series, which will have ten half-hour episodes, will premiere. However, Variety reported that shooting will begin in late spring.
The Sex and the City revival will follow Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate their life, relationships and friendship in their 50s.
Why is Kim Cattrall not in the Sex and the City revival?
Kim Cattral and Sarah Jessica Parker’s feud is no secret and is probably the reason why Cattral is giving the revival a miss.
Rumours of a rift between Kim and Sarah began right after the series ended in 2004. Their feud reportedly started over a question of salaries, and Kim has never shied away from expressing her true feelings about her co-star.
“I went past the finish line playing Samantha Jones because I loved Sex and the City,” Kim said in a 2019 interview with The Guardian. “It was a blessing in so many ways but after the second movie I’d had enough. I couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t just replace me with another actress instead of wasting time bullying. No means no.”
In 2018, when Kim’s brother passed away, Sarah offered her condolences but that didn’t go down well either.
“My Mom asked me today ‘When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?’ Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona,” she wrote on Instagram.
Well, a Sex and the City revival without Samantha Jones will feel incomplete, but that’s not to say we’re not excited that the girls are coming back together again!
