John Cena’s ‘Peacemaker’ In ‘The Suicide Squad’ To Get A Spinoff Series Of Its Own

It will be getting The Suicide Squad’s writer and director, James Gunn

While the release of James Gunn directed The Suicide Squad has been pushed to 2021, the excitement around its imminent arrival is showing no signs of ever ceasing. And adding fuel to fire is the recent HBO Max announcement– the platform has given a straight-to-series order for eight episodes of Peacemaker starring John Cena. The series is slated to be the upcoming The Suicide Squad‘s spinoff and will see Cena reprising his role from the film.

Peacemaker will be getting The Suicide Squad’s writer and director, James Gunn, on board– he will be writing the series and directing multiple episodes, starting with the pilot. In a recently released press release, it has been announced that HBO Max is all set to “explore the origins of the Peacemaker character, the master of weapons from the highly anticipated upcoming The Suicide Squad film.” It is slated to be an action-comedy series, with eight episodes for its first season.

James Gunn and The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran will also be associated with the spinoff as executive producers while John Cena will be the series’ co-executive producer as well. Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television will be producing Peacemaker, which is scheduled to begin production in early 2021. It will begin before The Suicide Squad releases in theatres on 6th August 2021 and Gunn resumes making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag,” James Gunn said about the upcoming The Suicide Squad spinoff. “I’m excited to expand ‘The Suicide Squad’ and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

“I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of ‘The Suicide Squad’ and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie,” John Cena said. “I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for ‘Peacemaker.’ We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

James Gunn is already a creator of a significant part of the MCU, having written and directed the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films and serving as executive producer on Avengers: Endgame as well as Avengers: Infinity War. Peacemaker will mark Gunn’s second collaboration within the DC universe.

On the other hand, the 16-time WWE champion John Cena has starred in films like Blockers, Trainwreck, Bumblebee, Ferdinand, as well as the ninth film in the Fast & Furious franchise.
