HBO has confirmed that Joss Whedon would not be a part of the Marketing for The Nevers as he faces abuse allegations from cast members of Buffy the vampire slayer.

Joss Whedon’s abuse allegations have taken a serious turn since Charisma Carpenter allegedly accused him of engaging in abusive behaviors towards her on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

HBO and HBO MAx Chief Content Officer has now acknowledged the accusations and released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter saying,  “When I read Charisma Carpenter’s accounts, it was distressing.”

Joss Whedon is the creator and former showrunner of The Nevers before he stepped down from the position in November, last year. Joss Whedon cited his physical exhaustion from making the series amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as the reason for his exit from the show.

Joss Whedon had earlier denied all abuse allegations stating that Charisma Carpenter’s abuse allegations “hasn’t really affected” the promotions for The Nevers.

It can also be pointed out that Joss Whedon was not mentioned in the promotional teaser of The Nevers.

Now, other cast members from Buffy have joined Charisma Carpenter, giving their testimony to the Joss Whedon abuse allegations. Amber Benson wrote, “Buffy was a toxic environment and it starts at the top. Carpenter is speaking truth and I support her 100%”.

Sarah Michelle Gellar extended her support, writing, “While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon.” Michelle Trachtenberg also thanked Gellar for her words highlighting the abusive behavior.

Joss Whedon abuse allegations came to light when Justice League actor Ray Fisher had spoken about the misconduct and abuse on his film and television productions. It led to an investigation by Warner Media, which concluded in December 2020. Warner Media claimed that a “remedial action has been taken” against Joss Whedon.

Nevertheless, Fisher is convinced that the Joss Whedon’s departure from The Nevers was related to the investigation, adding, “I have no intention of allowing Joss Whedon to use the old Hollywood tactic of ‘exiting’, ‘stepping down’, or ‘walking away’ to cover for his terrible behavior.”

The Nevers will feature Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Ann Skelly, Ben Chaplin, Pip Torrens, Zackary Momoh, Amy Manson, Nick Frost, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Denis O’Hare in the cast.
