The new year couldn’t have begun on a sadder note as Grey’s Anatomy’s Justin Chambers shared that he will be leaving the show after being our beloved Dr. Alex Karev for 16 seasons. If you think that 2020 is off to a sucky beginning, well you are not alone. Our favorite Dr. Meredith Grey i.e., Ellen Pompeo is also nursing a broken heart over the sudden departure of Chambers.
On 10th January this year, Justin Chambers shared the bad news with his fans
“There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” Chambers said. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time,” said Chambers, confirming that season 16th was the last fans of Grey’s Anatomy got to see the actor. We didn’t even get time to prepare!
Chambers added, “As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.”
Over the years, many original cast members had left the medical drama series
In fact, Chambers was one of the last four remaining original cast members in Grey’s Anatomy. But his upsetting declaration meant that November 21, 2019’s episode of the show was the last appearance of his character, Dr. Karev and the show will be returning to ABC on January 23 without him. That leaves three remaining original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson as Dr. Miranda Bailey, and James Pickens Jr. as Dr. Richard Webber as well as the gnawing questions regarding Chambers’ abrupt departure, just when his character on the shows, Dr. Karev, became the head of Pacific Northwest General Hospital. He didn’t get any special send-off episode like that other original cast members had when they left.
Ellen Pompeo took to Twitter to express her sadness over her co-actor leaving the show
Ellen Pompeo reacted to an article on Twitter, which called Justin Chambers’ departure from Grey’s Anatomy as “one of its biggest losses yet”.
Pompeo wrote, “Truer words never spoken” with a broken heart emoji.
