Whenever the story of King Arthur crops up, it always the same old- Arthur pulls out the mighty sword, Excalibur, set in stone, proving that he is the worthy king and saves magic. We have seen tons of shows and films doggedly following this troupe, but Netflix will be giving a feminist turn to the classic story in its fantasy-adventure series Cursed, which recently debuted its trailer, will reprise the Arthurian Legend but with Katherine Langford as Nimue becoming the Lady of the Lake.
Katherine Langford has previously starred in another Netflix original series, the teen drama 13 Reasons Why, as Hannah Baker, Season 1’s lead actress. For fans of the 24-year-old star, who missed her acting prowess given her barely-there role in the subsequent seasons of the show, will find Cursed as an apt antidote, ‘cause the latest trailer of the series is enough proof that Langford will get to do plenty!
According to a synopsis shared by Netflix earlier, Cursed “is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue (Langford), a young woman with a mysterious gift who is on the path to become the powerful Lady of the Lake. However, before taking the crown, Nimue teams up with Arthur (Devon Terrell), a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. During her journey to find Merlin, Nimue becomes a symbol of courage and rebellion against the Red Paladins and King Uther (Sebastian Armesto).”
Thus, the trailer for the fantasy series Cursed, following the teaser dropped by Netflix, seemingly expands upon the rebooted legend, focusing on the origins of the Lady of the Lake. The trailer shows how Nimue (Langford) is stuck between an ongoing war between the church and magic. She is tasked by her mother to bring the mighty yet “cursed” sword, Excalibur, to Merlin, who is, as the original story goes, supposed to help Arthur in winning the war and bringing magic back to Camelot.
But the journey is fraught with difficulties and dangers, forcing Nimue to wield the sword, which will bestow its magical powers and super strength to her, its wielder. The trailer of Cursed also shows Nimue using her magic against the havoc wrecked by the Red Paladins.
Cursed is adapted from author Tom Wheeler’s New York Times bestselling novel of the same name and will feature 10 episodes in its first season, which will premiere on Netflix on 17th July.
Apart from Langford and Terrell, Cursed also stars Gustaf Skarsgård (Merlin), Daniel Sharman (Weeping Monk), Billy Jenkins (Squirrel), Matt Stokoe (Gawain), Emily Coates (Sister Iris), Lily Newmark (Pym), Shalom Brune-Franklin (Igraine), Bella Dayne (Red Spear), and Peter Mullan (Father Carden).
