Michelle Obama’s Netflix show will feature two puppets named Waffles and Mochi, with Michelle Obama as a supermarket owner. The show will follow the characters as they try to become chefs
Describing the premise of the Michelle Obama show, Netflix issued a statement saying – “With the help of friendly new faces like the supermarket owner, Mrs. Obama, and a magical flying shopping cart as their guide, Waffles and Mochi blast off on global ingredient missions, traveling to kitchens, restaurants, farms and homes all over the world, cooking up recipes with everyday ingredients alongside renowned chefs, home cooks, kids and celebrities.”
The theme of the show is based on Michelle Obama’s 2010 “Let’s Move!” public health campaign which is aimed at curbing childhood obesity, as reported by Forbes. Michelle Obama has been known to use her platform to lead initiatives that help families get access to healthy, affordable food and increase physical activity. Waffles+Mochi is a Collaboration with Partnership for a Healthier America to deliver fresh ingredients to US Families hurt by the coronavirus pandemic.
Announcing the project, Michelle Obama tweeted on Tuesday, “I’m beyond thrilled to share that on March 16, I’ll be launching a new show on @Netflix Waffles + Mochi!”
Waffles +Mochi is a project by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions. Higher Ground Productions has a multi-year production deal with Netflix, which was signed in 2018.
Last week, Netflix had announced six new upcoming projects from Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground Productions, including a film about the first man to summit Mt. Everest and a YA thriller about a Native American teen who goes undercover. But they managed to keep the one featuring Michelle Obama herself a secret.
Waffles+ Mochi seems to have been previously announced with some details back in April 2019, but at the time was called ‘Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents’ — and there was no mention of Michelle Obama’s on-camera role.
It is unclear how bigger a role will Michelle Obama play in the series, but the teaser images show Mrs. Obama hanging with a bunch of puppets working in a garden, and excitedly talking about vegetables. Michelle Obama has already appeared twice on Sesame Street in 2009 and 2015 – both episodes highlighting healthy eating.
The first season of Waffles+ Mochi will be presented by showrunners Erika Thormahlen and Jeremy Konner, and will include ten 20-minute episodes. Erika Thormahlen had previously created her own TV pilot for a kids’ show called ‘What’s Cooking with Waffles and Mousemeat’ in 2006 — which appears to be the inspiration behind ‘Waffles + Mochi.’
Barack and Michelle Obama have been keeping themselves busy with various projects up their sleeves. Barack Obama has authored a book called “A Promised Land” – a quick bestseller – and Michelle Obama has already released her “Becoming” documentary on Netflix and even launched a podcast on Spotify.
Waffles+Mochi will start streaming on Netflix from March 16, this year.
