Mira Nair’s “A Suitable Boy” Trailer Is Here!

A “human, funny, political, sexy chronicle of India.”

BBC has dropped the first trailer of Mira Nair directed drama called “A Suitable Boy”. The series is set to premiere on BBC one at 9 p.m on July 26.

Director of Golden Globe-nominated Monsoon Wedding, Mira Nair has worked with author Vikram Seth, and Les Misérables and War & Peace writer Andrew Davies on this new Indian Period Drama.

It is shot all across India and features an all Indian cast from actor Ishaan Khatter (Known for his role in Dhadak and beyond the Clouds) to a largely unknown actress, Tanya Maniktala

In Mira Nair’s lavish work, Maniktala will play the lead role as Lata, a 19-year-old university student. Indian actress, Tabu, is also part of the cast of “A Suitable Boy” and will be playing Maan’s (Ishan Khatter) romantic interest.

Produced by Lookout Point, “A Suitable Boy” is the story of a coming-of-age, spirited university student named Lata. The story is set in 1951 in North India at a time where India is about to go to the polls for its first democratic general election and is still creating its identity as an independent nation.

Mira Nair’s ” A Suitable Boy” is a BBC adaptation of a book written by Vikram Seth is 1993 and shares the same name. The novel interweaves the story of four families living in 1951 together.

Lata, the lead, in the backdrop of 1951 rebels against her mother who remains insistent on finding a boy – A Suitable Boy- for Lata. And through their siblings’ marriage, Lata meets Maan.

Maan, the wayward who wants to live life to the fullest develops a crush on the courtesan Tabu, which causes an uproar in the family.

Executive Producer and adapter of the six-part series “A Suitable Boy”, Andrew Davies called the book “a charming, almost Austenesque story, with a delightfully relatable heroine, set against the turbulent background of India in the years following Partition.”

On the release of the first look of the drama, Director Mira Nair had spoken about the making of “A Suitable Boy”. She said, “The talent in the room sizzled: Vikram Seth, author of the masterpiece that I have loved since the day it was written, Andrew Davies, the great craftsman of distillation of epic stories into screenplays, cutting-edge actors, first-timers and legends from across the subcontinent, all coming together to make a human, funny, political, sexy chronicle of India.”
