For the longest time, Netflix has been stuck with a hit and miss situation when it came to doling out teen dramedies, consistently failing to present anything that its viewers resonated with. Then came Mindy Kaling’s hit Netflix coming-of-age comedy Never Have I Ever and swept us off our feet, such that even months after its Season 1 landed, the applause has not ceased. This makes the news of the streaming platform renewing it for a second-inning not that surprising, but it’s hard to not jump up and down in glee- Never Have I Ever Season 2 guys!
Yep, the relatable (mis)adventures of Devi Vishwakumar and her friends will continue.
The cast itself confirmed the news of Never Have I Ever Season 2 in the most hilarious fashion by getting on a Zoom call and beginning the conversation by bashing series star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan‘s new “quarantine bangs,” before she informed everyone about the exciting news.
“I just wanted to tell you guys that Never Have I Ever is being renewed for season 2,” she revealed.
As everyone burst into cheers and celebration, Darren Barnet, who will obviously reprise his role as Paxton Hall-Yoshida in the next season, took another hilarious jibe at Maitreyi’s hairstyle.
“Wow, that is much better news than you getting bangs,” said Barnet.
As of now, an official release date is yet to be announced. But given the instant wonder the first season has been, we as fans want Never Have I Ever Season 2 as soon as possible!
Never Have I Ever is Mindy Kaling’s brainchild who executive-produced the series and co-created it with Lang Fisher, who serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The series’ first season followed Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage schoolgirl, navigating her sophomore year of high school, dealing with out-of-control hormones, and her grief after the unexpected death of her father.
Kaling and Fisher dug around their own life experiences- both have lost parents- to create an authentic story for the character of Devi.
“We both lost parents, and we were like, ‘It would be so great to — in a show that’s a comedy show — be able to deal with a character who is unable to handle her grief,” she said. “Especially in a lot of Asian communities and minority communities, dealing with grief, or mental health, there’s still such a stigma attached to it.”
Apart from Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Never Have I Ever Season 2 will obviously (and hopefully) see other beloved characters return- Poorna Jagannathan (Devi’s mother Dr. Nalini Vishwakumar), Richa Moorjani (Devi’s cousin Kamala), Barnet (Devi’s crush Paxton), Lee Rodriguez and Ramona Young (Devi’s best friends, Fabiola and Eleanor), and Jaren Lewison (Ben Gross).
