What season finale it was! Star Wars fans have already been die-hard fans of how Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have been expertly handling the history of the galaxy far, far away. And now The Mandalorian Season 2’s finale has just cemented their status as people who can literally create magic. And now, we have another, brand new series helmed by the two maestros– The Book of Boba Fett, which is not the title of The Mandalorian Season 3.
[Spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian Season 2 finale]
Following “the way” of Marvel Studios, The Mandalorian presented its first-ever post-credits scene at the end of its Season 2 finale episode. The scene opened with Jabba the Hutt’s palace on the planet Tatooine and his chief steward, Bib Fortuna seated on his late master’s throne and a few of his lackeys meandering around. Fennec Shand effortlessly entered the palace, gunned down his goons and freed a Twi’lek slave girl.
Before Bib Fortuna could make head or tails of what was going on, Boba Fett shot him down and ascended his throne, with Fennec by his side.
While viewers were busy scrapping their fallen jaws from the floor, the last few seconds of the credits dropped another major revelation- The Book of Boba Fett, coming out in December 2021.
It triggered a lot of excitement and above all…
… left fans worried that The Book of Boba Fett is meant to replace The Mandalorian Season 3
At the Disney Investors Day event, which announced a long list of upcoming Star Wars projects, it was announced that The Mandalorian Season 3 is going to come out in December 2021. The Book of Boba Fett having the same release date sparked speculation that it is the title of the next season of the Disney+ series and will completely focus on Boba Fett instead.
There were even rumours that as the title of the series, The Mandalorian denotes both the bounty hunters, Boba Fett will replace Mando now that Baby Grogu is gone.
But finally, the questions about The Book of Boba Fett have been answered
“We wanted to hold this back because we didn’t want to spoil the surprise during the big Disney announcement of all the shows when Kathleen Kennedy was up there. And so they let me keep this one a secret,” Jon Favreau said in a recent appearance on Good Morning America, and also confirmed that The Mandalorian Season 3 is currently in the pre-production phase.
“So this is actually separate from ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3. But what we didn’t say in that announcement is that the next show coming up, Kathy said the ‘next chapter,’ and that’s going to be ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ and then we go into production right after that on Season 3 of ‘The Mandalorian,’ back with the main character that we all have known and loved,” he further added.
Production work has begun on The Book of Boba Fett that is slated to star Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett and Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand. The spin-off show will be executive produced by Favreau, Filoni and Robert Rodriguez.
