Rebel Wilson has turned host for the US version of the dog grooming competition Pooch Perfect. The show premiered on 30th March, Tuesday, and is already facing a backlash from the animal rights group PETA.
The American version of Pooch Perfect made it’s debut on ABC on Tuesday with 10 dog groomers competing for a $100,000 prize. With such huge prize money at hand, the groomers would have to show their creativity in every episode. One such challenge is to use tie-dye to transform the pets into colorful creations.
However, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) slammed Pooch Perfect, saying using dyes on dogs risks allergic reactions and fatal poisoning.
“Dogs trust us to keep them safe, but shows like Pooch Perfect can encourage people to treat them as if they were things to decorate, like a ceramic pot, giving them dangerous at-home dye jobs, which not only carry the risk of an allergic reaction or fatal toxic poisoning but also stress them out,” PETA stated.
“The dogs used on this show aren’t things but beings, and they deserve to curl up at home with a loving guardian — instead of having to put up with being leashed to a countertop and painted and prodded by strangers for hours on end.”
Viewers of the show aren’t very happy either. Some have even labelled the show as “doggie abuse.”
“I liked the first segment, but subjecting a pooch to 4 hours of coloring , cutting, etc. seems a bit much,” one Twitter user wrote. “Just saw a commercial for #PoochPerfect. Anyone else think that looks like doggie abuse? I mean,” wrote another. Some even asked PETA to “save these poor dogs from this nightmare.”
Not soon after, Rebel Wilson announced that she would be taking some time away from social media. The reason, however, is that the actress needs to focus on her work. She shared a video with her Instagram followers on Wednesday from a rooftop in London.
“I’m going to sign off for a bit because I’m filming a movie here in the U.K. that needs my full attention,” Wilson shared. “It’s a very different type of role for me, so I’ve really gotta immerse myself in it,” she stated.
Rebel Wilson is currently busy shooting for the drama ‘The Almond and the Seahorse’, a film adaptation of the Katie O’Reilly novel. It will be Wilson’s first non-comedy role.
