Sebastian Stan On The Falcon and The Winter Soldier & Bucky’s ‘Quest For Identity’

He is ‘re-educating’ himself

We first met Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes a.k.a. the Winter Soldier in the 2014 MCU film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and back then he was a major antagonist to the Avengers, especially Captain America. But he has come a long way since then. He has undergone a lot and is today on the way to become Sam Wilson’s new bestie in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. But just like Cap, he is a man removed from the life he was used to and stuffed in a different era. He is still searching for himself, his identity, and that’s the journey the upcoming Disney+ is going to explore further.

“I’ve spent 12 years with the character,” Sebastian Stan recently shared during a press conference for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. “You grow and evolve with the character…I felt like we had established the character a certain way…then we had to go into this and go, ‘Alright, well, what is he like now?’ Part of that was us honing in on his sense of humor so to speak…that came into the tone of the series and his dynamic with Sam Wilson and my own dynamic with Anthony [Mackie] and then marrying the two…We’re really kind of zooming in on his quest for identity and in terms of just really accepting his past and re-educating himself about the world that he’s currently in.”

In the MCU, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson and Bucky played by Sebastian Stan share a love-hate relationship and apparently when The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will begin, it will tend to be more of an opposites-on-the-same-team-reluctantly scenario.

“I don’t thin kit has changed,” Sebastian Stan shared “It’s only gone further divide. They’re actually in similar places at the start of the show because of Steve’s missing and the consequences of that. It’s sort of thrown them both into opposite corners in terms of facing their lives, their demons, the questions… They’ve got different things they’re facing but they’re in a similar place in terms of questions they’re asking, I believe.”

Anthony Mackie shares Sam’s dilemma in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

During the press conference, Anthony Mackie also spoke about why Sam Wilson is hesitating to take on the mantle of Captain America.

“Sam’s whole thing is he went on this journey, this Avenger journey, over 6 movies with Steve because of his respect and admiration for Steve. He says when Captain America shows up at your door, you answer,” the actor said “That being said, it’s the pain, the idea of not being able to go on these missions, not being able to help his friend.”

“There’s still people out there that still appreciate comradery and friendship…just like everybody else, you don’t want to see Steve Rogers go away…just like he was your Cap, Steve Rogers was Sam Wilson’s Cap,” Anthony Mackie added. “That’s why he says at the end of Endgame, ‘It feels like it’s someone else’s.’ He’s a fan just like everyone else…Sam is just a regular guy who won the lottery when Black Widow knocked on his door and he fell in love and was hoping to have a spinoff with Black Widow.”
