‘The Big Bang Theory’ Rejected Brie Larson, But Why And What Character Had She Auditioned For?

Who did she want to play?

Of late, the Oscar-winning actress, Brie Larson has been busy with her YouTube channel, posting videos about her life and career, beginning with listing series and films that have rejected her in the past. The one that stands out is the popular 7-time Emmy winner comedy show The Big Bang Theory for which the actor auditioned years ago and only got a rejection call from the makers. While she didn’t share much about why she was rejected and which role she had auditioned for.

Brie Larson would have been perfect for The Big Bang Theory

Before the actress floored everyone with the Academy Award-winning portrayal of an abuse victim in Room, Brie Larson was dabbling in comedy films, all of which have been major blockbusters. She even tried being a comedian and was seen on sketches on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno between 1996 and 1998. She went on to play the role of Toni Collette’s daughter in the comedy-drama United States of Tara (2009-2011), and even proved her comedic flare in films like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) and 21 Jump Street (2012).

What role could Larson have auditioned for on The Big Bang Theory?

In her recent YouTube video, Brie Larson shares that she screen-tested for The Big Bang Theory, while everyone was super nice to her during the auditions, she was later rejected and given the reason that she was too young for the part she had auditioned for. But even though Larson didn’t share which character she was vying to play in the hit comedy-drama, it isn’t exactly hard to deduce that it was Penny, one of the lead characters who lived across from socially awkward Leonard and Sheldon.

An actor is chosen for a part for two reasons: when they prove that they are capable of living the character and also when they somewhat fit the prior image of what the character should look like. Brie Larson is physically very similar to the part of Penny that eventually went to actress Kaley Cuoco, who played it for 12 seasons.

But why was she rejected?

Apart from the possibility that Brie Larson somehow didn’t manage to embody the quirks and behavioural aspects of the character, the only conclusion that can be drawn is that what she was told was true– she was too young to play the part. When The Big Bang Theory began in September 2007, for the initial seasons, especially the first one, Penny was overly sexualized to portray her as impossible to be resisted by the nerdy boys living across from her.

It was a cliched troupe the show was panned for and TBBT eventually stopped relying on it. But Kaley Cuoco was 21 at the time and the negative feedback was easier to deal with but had it been Larson as Penny the criticisms would have skyrocketed as she was merely 17 at the time the first season was being shot.
