When The Voice Season 18’s finale began last night, even though there were top 5 finalists, all eyes were locked on two contestants having the highest chances to become the winner- Thunderstorm Artis from Team Nick Jonas and Team Blake Shelton’s Todd Tilghman. And the odds were in Tilghman’s favor as he, the first person to audition on this season, was crowned the winner in The Voice finale, which was conducted remotely for the first time owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
The remote airing of The Voice finale was not without its share of technical difficulties and streaming issues but as host, Carson Daly said it was “unlike any we’ve ever done” and thus, “the excitement is more.”
More than the culmination of a singing reality show, last night’s episode felt more like a mini-concert that viewers got to attend for free from the confines of their homes.
Ample virtual guest performances as well as post-competition duets where the Top 5 performed with their coaches
The Season 18 coaches kicked off The Voice finale with a joint chorus of Let My Love Open the Door” with the Top 9 contestants and CeeLo Green, Shakira, and Bebe Rexha pitching in. For the duets, we got Todd Tilghman performing John Mellencamp’s Authority Song with Blake Shelton, Artis and Nick Jonas crooning a cover of Phil Collins’ You’ll Be In My Heart as a tribute to health-care workers battling COVID-19, followed by the remaining performances.
We also got to groove to Jon Bon Jovi performing Limitless, along with other guest performances like Lady Antebellum’s Champagne Night.
But the ultimate star of the night, apart from The Voice winner, was Nick Jonas
Nick Jonas may not have been the winning mentor but he, hands down, won the night when he debuted the video song X, with his brothers and Karol G. The last performance was by Nick Jonas again when he performed a cover of his new song, specially written for The Voice finale, Until We Meet Again, honoring the frontline workers for risking their lives every day during the pandemic. As his performance came to an end, his wife and actress Priyanka Chopra joined him and they ended the song with a sweet kiss.
And of course, the winner of The Voice Season 18- Todd Tilghman
As Daly announced his name as the winner of The Voice finale, earning Blake Shelton (the last original coach on the show) his seventh win, Tilghman, with his wife and eight children in Mississippi, was rendered speechless.
The lead pastor of Cornerstone Church in Meridian, Mississippi, Tilghman also won $100,000 and a recording contract.
