Much to fans’ delight, the sassy dance contest So You Think You Can Dance has returned after nearly a three-year hiatus, but a newly revamped judges’ panel. That includes known personalities like Dance Moms vet and latest ‘Dancing With the Stars’ runner-up JoJo Siwa, Glee’s Matthew Morrison, former So You Think You Can Dance judge and dancer Stephen “tWitch” Boss.
Why did the judges, particularly Nigel Lythgoe leave?
For 16 seasons, Nigel has been the one person consistently judging the show he started. While no details regarding Nigel’s absence from the show have been provided, he tweeted in March 2022.
“I am so thrilled that America’s young aspiring dance talent will get to work with some of our greatest creative choreographers,” wrote Nigel. “On a personally sad note, I have not been asked to be on the judging panel this season. I don’t know who will be saying Cue Music’ but I wish them well.”
Longtime judge and former ballroom dance champion, Mary Murphy, who spent a total of 11 seasons is also no longer judging show. In an exclusive interview with EW, Mary said, “Of course, I’m greatly saddened that I am not coming back to So You Think You Can Dance, but I’m so excited the show is coming back to create some more magic.”
“To all the dancers, I love you! Can you even imagine the talent pool for this season?” Mary asked. She then added, “I can’t wait to see all the new kids, because Mama Mary will always be watching. I hope you do too! Keep on dancing through life!”
However, one returning cast member is long-time host Cat Deeley. Cat has been hosting So You Think You Can Dance since its second season.
‘So You Think You Can Dance’ involves dancers aged 18 to 30 exhibiting their abilities in a variety of dance genres such as breaking, ballroom, hip-hop, tap, modern, and more.
The show went off the air for two years, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the past, it has also featured celebs like Vanessa Hudgens, Maddie Ziegler, Jason Derulo, Paula Abdul, Mia Michaels, and Adam Shankman.
So You Think You Can Dance airs on Wednesdays at 9pm on FOX.
