Tom Cruise made a grand entrance at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday where he walked the red carpet, received a surprise Palme d’Or honor and watched a squadron of French Fighter jets hover over the European premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, his latest flick.
How was Tom Cruise’s appearance at the Cannes Film Festival like?
The prestigious event paid tribute to the legendary actor through a number of honorary actions like a rare on-stage interview, a red carpet premiere featuring a trail of jets emitting colored smoke and offering him a surprise award of the highest stature.
Festival president Pierre Lescure announced the award to the 59-year-old actor while the audience gave him a standing ovation. Throngs of fans gathered around the Palais des Festivals shouting “Tom!” and trying to get a glimpse of the star. “Great Balls of Fire” blared on the red carpet.
“I’m going to take this all in, and I’m never going to forget this evening,” he said while looking at the crowd gathered there to watch the first screening of Top Gun: Maverick.
Tom Cruise got very candid about his career and his passion for studying and learning about film in the interview at the Cannes Film Festival. He spoke about meeting directors and writers and how he set up a meeting with Sydney Pollack when he was just 19-years-old. “I was studying movies, not just the names in the credits, but I would try to understand who did what,” he said.
He wasn’t ready to make the Topgun sequel
He also spoke about the latest Topgun movie and how the directors of the original movie wanted him to make a sequel almost immediately after the first part came out. He also opened up about how he felt that he wasn’t ready. “In doing sequels I learned I can have a dialogue with an audience,” he said.
He also talked about how he gets anxious when trying to do risky scenes and stunts. “Preparation is everything, even if you throw it away,” he said. “Everything I’m doing, I don’t want people to see the work behind it,” he added.
Although Tom Cruise and his team have to fly off to London later for another premiere of the movie, his appearance at the Cannes Film Festival was probably the highlight of the evening. “Thank you for this time,” he addressed the crowd at the Théâtre Lumière. “I make these movies for all of you.”
