Will Smith Suffers A Meltdown At Oscars 2022; Slaps Chris Rock For Taking A Jab At His Wife

Nobody disrespects Smith’s loved ones!

Will Smith, the 53-year-old actor had a major yikes moment at the Oscars 2022. The “Men In Black” actor smacked Chris Rock across the face when the latter poked fun at Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Apparently, the said incidence was not staged or even a part of the script and happened out of the blue.

What triggered Will Smith at the Oscars 2022?

Chris Rock, the 57-year-old comedian made a joke targeting Pinkett Smith during his speech before announcing the nominees for the Best Documentary category at the Oscars. “Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” he said referring to her bald head. The actress, who had been diagnosed with alopecia in 2018 and had been publicly vocal about her struggles with the disorder, rolled her eyes at the “joke” in annoyance.

Will Smith, who was previously seen smiling at the joke, later went on to slap Chris Rock, supposedly for disrespecting his wife. Who knew what happened in the moment when the scene cut from Smith apparently smiling to Chris Rock again? But anyway, Will Smith’s meltdown was not looked at nicely by other attendees at the Oscars 2022. Luckily, the comedian did not take this too seriously.

“Oh wow. Wow. Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me,” he said both stunned and laughing after Smith left the stage. However, this was not the end of the “Aladdin” actor’s anger. After he went back to his seat, he yelled out, “Keep my wife’s name out your f*****g mouth!” to which the comedian replied, “Wow dude. It was a G.I. Jane joke.” Smith again retaliated with “Keep my wife’s name out your f*****g mouth.” The altercation finally ended with Rock agreeing to Will. “I’m going to, okay?” he said.

He was comforted by his fellow actors and colleagues

After this incident took place, fellow actors like Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper, and Tyler Perry had a talk with Smith regarding what happened. According to People magazine, Washington “did not acknowledge Chris Rock” but rather “said something to Will and went back to his seat.” Apparently, Smith’s publicist Meredith O. Sullivan and Oscar producer Will Packer also came to talk to Smith during the commercial break.

Will Smith’s acceptance speech for his win in the Best Actor category

Later that evening, Will Smith won the award for his role in King Richard, a movie based on the life of Richard Williams, the parent and coach of tennis aces Serena and Venus Williams. In his acceptance speech, he apologized to the Academy and his fellow Best Actor nominees. He kept Chris Rock’s name out of it though.

“I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people. Tim and Trevor and Zack and Saniyya and Demi and Aunjanue and the entire cast and crew of ‘King Richard,’ Venus and Serena, the entire Williams family. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams,” he said in his emotional acceptance speech.

“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time in my life, in this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world. Making this film, I got to protect Aunjanue Ellis, who is one of the strongest, most delicate people I’ve ever met. I got to protect Saniyya and Demi, the two actresses that played Venus and Serena,” he continued. “I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people. I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse. You got to be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business you got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you got to smile and you got to pretend like that’s okay,”he added.

Smith also revealed what Denzel Washington had said to him after his face-off with Chris Rock. “Thank you, Dee. Denzel said a few minutes ago, ‘At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the Devil comes for you,’” he said.

“To my mother — a lot of this moment is really complicated for me — but to my mother, she didn’t want to come out. She had her knitting friends; she has a knitting crew that she’s in Philly watching with. Being able to love and care for my mother and my family, my wife — I’m taking up too much time. Thank you for this honor. Thank you for this moment. And thank you on behalf of Richard and Oracene [Price] and the entire Williams family. Thank you. I hope the Academy invites me back,” with this Will Smith finished his acceptance speech at the Oscars 2022.
