Early Life & Childhood

Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, U.S, to parents Deborah R. (Nelson) and Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., who were also musicians and in a band together known as Daddy Warbucks. His parents separated after his father left the family. He has a half-brother and sister from his father’s side and a half-brother from his mother’s side.

The rapper spent his childhood moving back and forth from Kansas City to Detroit. Due to this reason he had to switch schools multiple times every two to three months. Mathers attended Lincoln High School in Warren, Michigan from 1986 to1989.

Mathers had been a fan of rap since a very early age and started rapping at the age of 4. Doing freestyle battles with his classmates in school was a respite in his otherwise unstable childhood and the torment of bullies.

Career

Eminem started seriously rapping at the age of 14 and soon started gaining attention for his skills. He named himself M&M which he would later respell as ‘Eminem’. However, initially, the rapper was rejected in the community due to his race as rap and hip-hop is a genre usually dominated by the Black populace of the American society. After failing 9th grade three times consecutively, he dropped out of high school and began his journey towards being a successful rapper by forcing himself on radio shows, freestyle rap battles, etc. but more often than not he was either shunned or deemed as not good enough. He released his first debut album “Infinite” in 1996, which albeit sold less than a thousand copies, began earning him more stages and shows. It was also during this time that his daughter, Hailie Jade Scott was born with his long time girlfriend Kim Scott.

During this very difficult time in his life, with no money to support his family, Eminem set out to express his frustrations through his music. Soon, his words gained attention in the underground hip-hop community and the rapper released his first EP, the ‘Slim Shady EP’ in 1997.

The rapper entered the 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles as his last trump card for winning a cash prize that he desperately needed after being evicted from his home. He stood his ground and battled for an hour while also tackling several racial disses that were thrown at him. Although the rapper was unable to win the rap battle, he was noticed by producers from Interscope, who were also handed a copy of “Infinite” as a demo. The demo reached the hands of the famous rapper Dr. Dre who found Eminem and invited him to work with him. They recorded four songs, three of which were included in the ‘Slim Shady LP’. He also worked with Dr. Dre on the latter’s album and helped him produce a few of his tracks.

The two also began working on Eminem’s second LP, which came to be known as the ‘Marshall Mathers LP’ and released in May 2000. This album too won lots of awards and accolades. The ‘Marshall Mathers LP’ eventually sold more than 21 million copies and became the fastest-selling hip-hop album in history. His next album, ‘The Eminem Show’ sold more than 27 million albums. In total, the rapper has sold more than 170 million albums worldwide and has become a sensation both in the rap community and outside.

He went on to release several full length studio albums after this like ‘Encore’ (2004), ‘Relapse’ (2009), ‘Recovery’ (2010), ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2’ (2013), ‘Revival’ (2017) and ‘Kamikaze’ (2018).
