Early Life & Childhood
Jennifer Lawrence was born on August 15, 1990, in a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky, to parents Karen and Gary. Her mother manages a children’s camp while her father owns a construction firm. Jennifer has two older brothers, Ben and Blaine.
Jennifer knew from a very young age that she wanted to act and used to actively participate in church plays, school musicals and the local theater.
At the age of 14, she convinced her parents to take her to New York to audition for talent agencies. The agents were highly impressed by her first cold read, calling it the “best cold read by a 14- year-old they had ever heard”. Her parents, however, wanted her to finish schooling before she got into acting.
She left the agency but was then discovered by a photographer in the midst of an ad shoot. Although she didn’t make the part, the agents still signed her. They urged her parents to let her stay in New York, and so she did, doing small acting roles and modeling for advertisements.
She appeared in commercials like MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16”, which led to bigger gigs like a Burger King ad. She even landed a role in the 2007 thriller Devil You Know, which got shelved and was ultimately released in 2013.
Lawrence also finished high school two years early, which further prompted her parents to move to LA so she could further her acting career.
After her move to LA, things started moving swiftly for Jennifer Lawrence. She played small roles in different series before bagging a part in the comedy The Bill Engvall Show, in which she appeared from 2007 to 2009. She won a Young Artist Award for Outstanding Young Performer in a TV Series for the same in 2009.
In 2008, she made her film debut with Garden Party, after which she appeared in movies like The Poker House and The Burning Plain.
This was followed by Winter’s Bone (2010), a film that truly launched her as a promising young star. The film also earned her her first best actress Academy Award nomination, when she was just 20.
Lawrence rose to even greater heights with her following projects. In 2011, she played Mystique in X-Men: First Class, a role which she reprised in the subsequent films.
In 2012, she got the biggest role of her life, being cast as Katniss Everdeen in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collin’s wildly popular The Hunger Games. The film went on to become one of the highest-grossing movies ever, earning over $407 million at the domestic box office.
The same year, Lawrence starred in David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook opposite Bradley Cooper. She won an Oscar for her role as Tiffany Maxwell in the film, becoming the second-youngest woman to win the Academy Award for best actress.
She teamed up with Russell again for American Hustle (2013), earning an Oscar nod for her role. In 2015 again, the actress-director duo reunited for Joy, which also won her an Oscar nomination, making her the youngest performer in history to have accrued four Academy Award nominations.
In 2016, the star was seen in the sci-fi film Passengers. The next year, Lawrence successfully experimented with genres as she starred in the spine-bending Mother!
2018 saw her play the role of a ballerina-turned-spy in Red Sparrow. Her next film Dark Phoenix was a box-office disaster, but Jennifer Lawrence has many interesting projects in the pipeline.
