Early Life & Childhood

Ryan Thomas Gosling was born on 12th November 1980 in London, Ontario, making him a Canadian-born actor. Both of his parents, Thomas Ray Gosling and Donna Gosling are of French-Canadian descent. Sadly for Ryan, they divorced when he was just a thirteen year old, after which he lived with his mother and older sister, Mandi.

As his father moved around a lot due to work, Ryan spent his school years in different educational institutions like Gladstone Public School, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School and Lester B. Pearson High School. His inspiration to become an actor came from watching the gritty American detective film, Dick Tracy. Ryan Gosling was a pretty notorious student in school as when he watched the famous Sylvestor Stallone starrer action flick, First Blood, which inspired him to the point that he decided to bring knives into school and if that wasn’t enough, he also threw them at other students which got him suspended. Gosling was also homeschooled for a year by his mother who left her job to focus on him.

He built his on-stage skills by performing at weddings, where he used to sing along with his sister which landed him a spot in his uncle’s act, Elvis Perry who ran a tribute act for the late King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. He also developed dancing and ballet skills by performing for a ballet company.

Ryan Gosling’s career began when he was 12 and decided to audition for Disney Channel’s Micky Mouse Club in 1993, his dancing and singing skills which he honed as a kid helped him land a two-year contract as a ‘Mouseketeer” on the show which started his fame, and those years are considered to be the best years of his life according to himself. On the set of the show, his co-stars consisted of Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera, who also have become renowned personalities in music. Ryan Gosling also became best of friends with Justin Timberlake and the two even lived together for a while for the second year of the contract.

But that Disney dream did not last long as the show was cancelled in 1995 but luckily for Ryan, he got gigs in different entertainment shows like 1995’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” (1995) and “Goosebumps” in 1996, and also starring in the coming of age show, Breaker High where played the role of a ladies man, Sean Hanlon from 1997-98. It was also during the same time that he made the decision of dropping out of high school in order to focus solely on his acting career. Gosling also starred as the titular lead in Fox Kids’ “Young Hercules” from 1998-99.

Then Ryan decided to come out of his child star shadow as he wanted to land roles in more serious movies and grow as an actor from acting in TV shows to movies. Which he achieved by starring in the drama, “Remember The Titans” as a supporting role in 2000, a year after that, he finally landed a lead role in an indie movie, The Believer, where he portrayed the role of a young Jewish-Neo Nazi. While the movie was controversial leading to its lack of theatrical release, it received the Grand Jury Prize at the famous event meant to promote indie movies, The Sundance Film Festival. Then in the two consecutive years, he acted in two crime dramas and one drama flick- “Murder by Numbers”, “The United States of Leland” and “The Slaughter Ruler” respectively.

Ryan Gosling finally stepped into the spotlight of a mainstream Hollywood actor, when he starred in the famous Romance Drama, The Notebook, where he starred alongside Rachel McAdams. Then he achieved a big milestone in his career by receiving a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the indie film, “Half Nelson” in 2006. After which it was all smooth sailing for Ryan, as he starred in popular films like- Fracture, Blue Valentine, Crazy Stupid Love, Drive, Blade Runner 2049 and La La Land, all of which are a must-watch.

Ryan Gosling also did not let his singing skills die out as he started a rock-duo with his friend, Zach Shields in 2007 by the name Dead Man’s Bones which he has been having fun with.
